The Office Chair is Tilting
Admin October 10, 2026
The repair methods for a tilting office chair depend on the direction of the tilt, as detailed below:

If the chair tilts to one side
- Check the wheels and the ground condition
Place the chair upright and observe whether each wheel foot makes even contact with the ground. If the ground is uneven, the chair will tilt towards the lower side, and you'll need to adjust the ground or use foot pads. If the wheels are damaged (e.g., bent or broken), contact the manufacturer to order a matching wheel set, or take the old wheels to an office supplies store to find compatible models. - Replace the wheels
If the wheels are stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver to assist in pulling out the old casters. Apply a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40 or Vaseline) to the sockets on the chair base, and use a rubber mallet to tap the new casters into the sockets. After installation, test if the chair is still tilting. If the problem persists, further inspect the seat plate. - Check for other structural issues
- Leg length: Use a thin string to stretch diagonally across the four legs of the chair. If the lines do not coincide, it indicates that the legs are deformed.
- Connecting parts: Shake the chair to listen for any creaking sounds. If present, tighten the screws or replace any loose parts.
- Foot pads and frame: Check if the foot pads are worn or have fallen off. For solid wood mortise-and-tenon structures, confirm that the tenons are not loose or cracked.
If the chair tilts forward
- Adjust the tilt mechanism
The tilt adjustment mechanism of an office chair is usually located under the chair or at the connection between the seat cushion and the backrest. Rotate or slide the adjustment parts according to your weight and needs to restore a reasonable tilt angle. The operation methods may vary depending on the model, so refer to the instruction manual. - Tighten or replace damaged parts
- Loose screws: Tighten the M8 hex socket screws at the connection between the five-claw wheels and the seat cushion, or adjust the backrest resistance knob.
- Damaged parts: If the backrest spring adjustment fails or the gas lift rod has abnormal lifting, replace the parts. Use a level to detect the tilt of the seat surface. If the error exceeds 3ยฐ, it is recommended to replace the gas rod or the seat (the gas lift rod should be a part with a ใSGSใ certification and should be replaced every 3-5 years).
- Improve usage habits
- Weight factor: Users weighing over 90 kg are more likely to cause the seat to tilt forward. Consider using a chair frame with a strengthened bow-shaped base.
- Posture adjustment: Avoid habitual forward leaning. Install an L-shaped seat support frame or upgrade the thickness of the rear explosion-proof steel plate (from 2 mm to 3 mm) to balance the three-point force.
