Staff Office Chair Adjustment

Admin October 13, 2026

Adjusting a staff office chair requires consideration of multiple aspects such as height, sitting posture angle, armrest height, and recline function to enhance comfort and reduce physical stress.

1. Seat Height Adjustment
Seat height is a fundamental adjustment. When adjusting, ensure that both feet are flat on the ground, with the thighs and lower legs forming an angle of 95ยฐ to 100ยฐ, allowing for even distribution of body weight. If the chair is too high, causing the feet to hang in the air, a footrest can be used; if it is too low, increasing pressure on the knees, the seat height should be raised. This angle range effectively disperses pressure and prevents fatigue from prolonged sitting.

2. Sitting Posture Angle Adjustment
Maintaining a slightly reclined sitting posture (100ยฐ to 110ยฐ) can significantly reduce lumbar spine pressure. The key is to have the back, especially the lower back, in contact with the chair back. If the chair is equipped with a lumbar support, adjust it to support the natural curve of the lumbar spine, avoiding a hollow lower back. This posture helps disperse the weight of the upper body and reduce pressure on the intervertebral discs.

3. Armrest Height Adjustment
The height of the armrests should match the position of the elbows when they are naturally hanging down, allowing the forearms to rest comfortably on the armrests or desk, with the upper arms and forearms forming an angle of about 100ยฐ. This design relieves shoulder strain and prevents tension in the neck and shoulder muscles caused by hanging arms. If the armrests are too high or too low, they may cause arm or shoulder pain.

4. Recline Function Adjustment
The recline function should be adjusted according to the type of chair:

  • Lever Adjustment System: Common in mid- to high-end office chairs. Locate the lever on the side beneath the seat, release the recline lock (if present), adjust your body weight to lean backward, synchronously adjust the lever to a comfortable angle, and finally lock it (if locking is available).
  • Knob Adjustment System: Often found in ergonomic chairs. Locate the knob at the center beneath the seat, turn it clockwise to increase recline resistance and counterclockwise to decrease it; some chairs may require separate knobs for angle adjustment, refer to the instruction manual for operation.
  • Pneumatic Adjustment System: Commonly used in modern office chairs. The pneumatic lever is shared with the height adjustment lever, push in different directions to adjust the recline angle, and gently pull the lever to fix the position.

The choice of recline angle should be based on task requirements: choose a smaller angle (e.g., 100ยฐ) for high concentration tasks and a larger angle (e.g., 110ยฐ) for relaxed thinking. Proper recline promotes relaxation of back muscles and blood circulation, alleviating fatigue from prolonged sitting.

5. Monitor Height Auxiliary Adjustment
Elevate the monitor so that your line of sight is level with the top edge of the screen, forcing the spine to stretch naturally, avoiding forward head posture, and reducing neck strain. This adjustment should be coordinated with seat height to ensure overall sitting posture complies with ergonomic principles.
