Repair Office Chair Tray

Admin October 19, 2026

Repairing an office chair tray can be done following these steps:

I. Identify the Cause The wobbling of an office chair tray is often caused by mechanical fatigue, with common reasons including:

  1. Loose mechanical connections: Prolonged use can lead to hidden loosening of screws, such as at the connections between the seat cushion and tray, and between the tray and the five-claw bracket.
  2. Worn nylon slide rails/plastic clips: The nylon slide rails or fixed clips that control the tilt angle may become white and brittle due to long-term friction, resulting in increased clearance.
  3. Aged interface components: The metal clips or inner plastic sleeves at the interface between the gas lift and the tray may wear out or become loose.
  4. Gas lift issues: If accompanied by failure to lift or slow sinking, it may be due to gas leakage inside the gas lift (requiring replacement of the gas lift); if only the connection area wobbles, the problem lies with the tray interface.

II. Step-by-Step Repair Operations

  1. Safety Inspection and Preliminary Observation

    • Lay the chair flat and remove any weight. Check for cracks, deformations, or detached components at the five-claw bracket of the tray, the connection points of the casters, the central turntable, and the interface of the gas lift.
    • Manually shake the seat to determine the source of the wobble: the upper part (connection between the seat cushion and the tray) or the lower part (connection between the tray and the gas lift/casters).
  2. Targeted Repairs

    • Screw tightening: Use a screwdriver or wrench to tighten all visible connecting screws one by one, focusing on the connection points between the seat cushion and the tray, and between the tray and the bracket.
    • Replacement of worn parts: If the nylon slide rails, plastic clips, or interface plastic sleeves are worn, purchase corresponding replacement parts.
    • Overall replacement of the tray: If the metal structure is severely deformed or worn and cannot be repaired, purchase a same-model or universal tray for overall replacement.
  3. Handling Special Cases

    • Stripped screws: Wrap Teflon tape around the screw to increase friction; if ineffective, replace with a larger screw or use a thread repair tool.
    • Screw model identification: The common specification is metric M6 (diameter 6mm, length 20-30mm). It is recommended to disassemble the old screw for measurement or carry it for comparison when purchasing.

III. Disassembly Methods

  1. Disassembling the tray: Invert the chair and tap specific positions on the chassis with a rubber mallet (or an iron hammer padded with a towel) to separate the tray from the seat cushion.
  2. Handling the gas lift: If the gas lift needs to be disassembled, invert the chair and tap the bottom of the gas lift flatly with a hammer, avoiding touching the middle clip.
