Pneumatic Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 09, 2026

Pneumatic office chair explosion refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon caused by component defects in pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs, mostly occurring in low-quality pneumatic rod products.

Explosion Principle

The pneumatic rod of a pneumatic office chair is essentially a miniature high-pressure vessel, similar in principle to a bicycle pump, relying on air pressure to push a piston to achieve seat height adjustment. Qualified pneumatic rods from reputable manufacturers are filled with high-purity inert nitrogen gas, which is stable and safe to control. A compliant pneumatic rod can withstand up to 2000 pounds of pressure. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers, in order to cut costs, replace nitrogen with cheap ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air continuously reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, causing continuous rusting and heat accumulation. This turns the pneumatic rod into a sealed, continuously pressurized pressure cooker, with internal pressure soaring and the external tube wall becoming thinner and more brittle, creating a hidden danger for explosion.

Explosion Hazards

There have been numerous explosion cases. For example, in 2013, Ms. Liu was sitting on a pneumatic lift swivel chair purchased online while blow-drying her hair when the chair suddenly exploded. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through her body and into her abdomen, and dozens of metal fragments were extracted from her abdomen and intestines. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod from a pneumatic chair pierced into his body while adjusting the chair. Over the past decade, more than forty such tragedies have occurred in China, all involving the bottom of the seat's pneumatic rod exploding and piercing through the human body.

Explosion Causes

According to a sampling inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3% in 2020, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were concentrated on the substandard high and low-temperature resistance performance of the pneumatic rods and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates. Other causes include overly thin tube walls of the pneumatic rods and sudden temperature increases caused by frequent lifting and lowering.

Preventive Measures

  • Purchase products from reputable manufacturers: It is recommended to choose products priced over 200 yuan, check for official manufacturer logos on the chairs, and select branded products with quality certifications (such as SGS or ISO certifications).
  • Inspect the pneumatic rod: Ensure smooth lifting and lowering, observe for any obvious scratches or deformations on the pneumatic rod, and replace the chair promptly if it wobbles unsteadily.
  • Install explosion-proof steel plates: Ensure that an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod.
