Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 19, 2026
Replacing office chair wheels can be done independently by mastering key steps and points. Here are the specific operations and precautions:

I. Confirm Wheel Type and Size
- Type Identification: Invert the chair and observe the wheel axle structure. Snap-ring wheels have a circular groove at the top of the axle and emit a 'click' sound when pressed; threaded wheels have visible external threads, similar to a screw structure.
- Size Measurement: Use a vernier caliper to measure the original wheel diameter (common specifications: 5cm for light-duty chairs, 6cm for medium-duty chairs, and 7.5cm for heavy-duty chairs) and the diameter of the insertion rod (the international standard is ฮฆ11mm, with an allowable error of โค0.2mm).
II. Prepare Tools
- Snap-ring wheels: No tools required, or prepare a screwdriver, flat tool, pliers, and hammer (for auxiliary disassembly).
- Threaded wheels: A 6-inch adjustable wrench is needed. For severe rust, WD-40 lubricant can be prepared.
III. Remove Old Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels:
- Insert a screwdriver into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, gently pry the snap-ring position, and pull it out vertically after hearing a 'click' sound.
- If prying is difficult, use pliers to clamp the root of the wheel axle and pull it out forcefully, or use a hammer to lightly tap the bottom of the wheel axle to assist in disassembly.
- Threaded wheels:
- Use a wrench to clamp the root of the wheel axle and rotate it counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground.
- For severe rust, first spray WD-40 lubricant and wait for 5 minutes before attempting to disassemble again.
IV. Install New Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole of the chair leg and press it vertically until a 'click' sound is heard, or forcefully insert it (repeat the operation if not successful at once).
- Threaded wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole and rotate it clockwise until it is fully tightened, avoiding excessive force that may cause the threads to strip.
V. Testing and Acceptance
- Push the chair to slide on a tiled floor. The noise should be below 45 decibels, and it should roll continuously for 10 meters without jamming.
- Ensure that the bottom of the gas lift is at least 2cm above the ground to avoid tilting the chair or damaging the gas lift rod.
VI. Key Points for Wheel Selection
- Material Matching: For hard floors (wooden/tiled), choose PU wheels to reduce scratches; for carpeted environments, choose nylon wheels to enhance penetration.
- Special Needs: For families with children, choose wheels with brakes (can withstand 50kg lateral force); for high-frequency moving scenarios such as gaming chairs, choose double ball bearing wheels (smoothness increased by 60%).
- Quality Certification: Prioritize products that have passed SGS certification, with heavy metal content meeting the EU EN71-3 standard.
- Price Reference: The unit price of ordinary nylon wheels is about 3 yuan, with a lifespan of 6-12 months; a set of high-quality PU wheels (5 pieces) costs about 15 yuan, with a lifespan of up to more than 3 years.
VII. Precautions
- If the interface of the new wheel does not match, lightly sand the metal insertion rod with sandpaper, or wrap the threads with Teflon tape to increase the diameter (only for temporary use, which will reduce the load-bearing capacity).
- The wheel diameter allows an error of ยฑ0.5cm, but it must be ensured that the bottom of the gas lift is โฅ2cm above the ground after installation.
