Office Chair Troubleshooting

Admin October 13, 2026

Targeted solutions can be taken for office chair malfunctions based on different situations, as follows:

Stuttering Issues

If the swivel chair stutters, squeaks, or feels dry, you can purchase Tiger Full Synthetic Swivel Chair Lubricant and apply it. Ensure even application, and after applying, use a towel to wipe off excess grease, allowing the lubricant to fully penetrate. This will effectively improve the chair's operation and reduce stuttering and unusual noises.

Reclining Failure

When the chair fails to recline, it may be because the chair's function is locked. In this case, find the relevant button, pull it outward, and then lean the backrest backward. Usually, this will restore the chair's reclining function.

Tilt to One Side

  • Check the Wheels: First, check if the wheels are uneven when the chair is placed upright and upside down, ensuring each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. Turn the chair upside down and carefully inspect each wheel foot for signs of damage. If the wheels are damaged, purchase a new set of matching wheels. You can contact the manufacturer with the chair model for an order or take the old wheels to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set, paying special attention to matching the shape and size of the wheel axles.
  • Remove the Casters: Pull out the casters directly by hand. If they cannot be pulled out, insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the wheel foot and the chair's contact point, using it as a lever to operate slowly back and forth. Pull out about 1 centimeter and then pull again. In rare cases, the casters are fixed with screws; in this case, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove them.
  • Apply Lubricant: Apply a small amount of spray lubricant, such as WD-40, to each chair base socket. Insert the straw into the spray nozzle and insert it into each socket for a quick spray, about half a second per socket. If you do not have lubricant spray, apply a pea-sized amount of Vaseline to each wheel axle.
  • Install the Casters: Use a rubber mallet to knock each caster into the chair socket, aligning the caster rod with the intended base. First, push gently by hand. If it does not click into place, gently tap with a rubber mallet until the rod is fully inserted into the base, trying to tap near the base of the stem.
  • Check the Seat Plate: Turn the chair upside down to test the new wheels. If it still tilts, check if the seat plate is damaged. Lay the chair on its side to find the metal seat plate, which is usually a roughly square black painted steel plate located at the bottom of the chair seat, with a cylindrical column connected to it.

Normal Unusual Noises

The chair's structure has only one support point, which can cause normal looseness. When the reclining angle reaches its maximum, the back will touch the chassis. The unusual noises produced in these situations are normal and do not require special treatment.

Unusual Noises After Prolonged Use

Unusual noises after prolonged use may be caused by the gas lift or the wheels. You can inspect and address specific components accordingly.
