Conversion of Office Chair to Adjustable Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

An office chair can be converted into an adjustable chair by replacing the gas lift or utilizing the existing gas lift metal frame. Here are the specific conversion methods and precautions:

I. Conversion Methods

  1. Replacing the Gas Lift
If the office chair originally had a gas lift function but the gas lift is damaged, it can be converted by replacing it with a new one. The specific steps are as follows:
  • Removing the Old Gas Lift: Step on the bottom of the chair and shake it to loosen and remove the old gas lift. If the gas lift is tightly connected to the base, use a tool to tap the circular part around the gas lift to separate it from the base.
  • Installing the New Gas Lift: Insert the new gas lift vertically into the base hole, ensuring the correct installation direction. Then, place the seat on top and press down to tightly connect the seat with the gas lift, completing the fixation.
  1. Utilizing the Existing Gas Lift Metal Frame
If the office chair is scrapped but retains the gas lift metal frame (such as the gas lift and five-star base), you can directly disassemble and utilize its adjustment function:
  • Disassembling Components: Remove non-essential components such as the wheels and five-star base from the original chair, retaining the gas lift and adjustment mechanism.
  • Reassembling the Structure: Connect the gas lift to a new base (such as a wooden or metal base), ensuring the adjustment mechanism works properly. If you need to retain the seat, ensure its compatibility with the gas lift.

II. Precautions

  1. Selecting a Qualified Gas Lift
The gas lift is the core component of an adjustable chair, and its quality directly affects safety. When converting, choose a gas lift that has passed national safety certification (such as the GB/T 29288-2012 standard) and avoid using inferior products. Inferior gas lifts may pose explosion risks due to insufficient pressure, poor sealing, or fragile materials, seriously threatening user safety.

  2. Checking Structural Compatibility
Before conversion, ensure that the dimensions of the new gas lift match those of the original chair's base and seat. For example, the diameter of the gas lift should match the hole in the base, and the mounting hole on the seat should be compatible with the top structure of the gas lift. If the dimensions do not match, it may result in unstable installation or adjustment failure.

  3. Operating Standards and Safety
Use appropriate tools when disassembling old components to avoid damaging or scratching them through violent disassembly. When installing the new gas lift, ensure it is inserted vertically to prevent sealing failure due to tilting. After conversion, test the lifting function to ensure there are no issues such as jamming, abnormal noises, or air leaks before use.

By following standard procedures and selecting appropriate materials, an office chair can be safely converted into an adjustable chair, extending the lifespan of the furniture and meeting height adjustment needs.
