Sudden Drop of Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

The most common causes of a sudden drop in an office chair are air pressure rod leakage or malfunction of the adjustment valve, requiring immediate cessation of use and troubleshooting.

Three-Step Quick Troubleshooting Method

  1. Listen for Sounds
Sit on the chair or press down on the seat with your hand, observing the dropping process:

    • If accompanied by a 'hissing' sound of air leakage and the chair drops directly and rapidly (without cushioning), it can be preliminarily determined as air pressure rod leakage.
    • If the chair drops slowly with cushioning, it may be due to the overloading triggering the protection mechanism or slight air leakage.
  2. Inspect the Appearance
Remove the seat base plate and focus on checking the connections between the air pressure rod and the five-star base, as well as the seat:

    • If oil leakage is found, it indicates that the seal of the air pressure rod has failed, causing internal high-pressure nitrogen to leak.
    • Also, check whether all adjustment screws at the bottom of the chair and the fixing screws at both ends of the air pressure rod are loose, as looseness may lead to structural instability.
  3. Test the Operation
Repeatedly operate the lift control lever or button:

    • If there is stuttering, abnormal resistance, or complete inability to trigger the lift, it may be due to the adjustment valve being stuck by foreign objects or internal mechanism damage.
    • Confirm whether the user's weight has consistently exceeded the chair's safe weight capacity (usually 120 kilograms), as overloading may accelerate the aging of the air pressure rod or trigger protective exhaust.

Handling Solutions

  • Loose screws: Tighten all visible screws to restore stability.
  • Stuck adjustment valve: Clean out foreign objects and apply a small amount of lubricating grease, then test whether the lift function is normal.
  • Air pressure rod leakage or severely damaged adjustment valve: The parts need to be replaced. When replacing them yourself, prepare tools such as a rubber mallet and pipe wrench, wear safety goggles throughout the operation, ensure the chair is at its lowest height, place it sideways on a stable surface with soft padding underneath, and never disassemble, drill, or repair a faulty air pressure rod (the internal high-pressure state may cause an explosion).
  • Electric lift chair or complex structure: If the cause of the fault cannot be determined, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel for handling.

Safety Tips

After the air pressure rod leaks, the chair may suddenly collapse, posing a risk of falling, so it must be stopped from being used. When replacing parts, prioritize choosing qualified accessories that match the original chair to avoid secondary faults caused by compatibility issues.
