Office Chair Spring Safety
Admin October 10, 2026
Overall, the safety of office chair springs (gas springs) is relatively high, but there is a risk of explosion with inferior products, which requires proper selection and standardized use to avoid hidden dangers.

1. Safety Standards and Testing Ensure Basic Safety
Gas springs produced by reputable manufacturers must pass multiple rigorous tests:
- Material and Sealing Performance: The cylinder wall thickness, piston rod surface hardness, and corrosion resistance treatment must undergo mechanical calculations and salt spray tests. Seals must maintain a low leakage rate within a temperature range of -20ยฐC to 70ยฐC, with an elastic recovery rate of no less than 90% after long-term compression.
- Fatigue Life Testing: Simulating 20,000 recline operations per year by users, the support force must not decay by more than 15% of the initial value after 100,000 cycles.
- Impact Testing: Passing 120,000 impact tests, the probability of explosion is as low as one in ten million.
2. Root Cause of Safety Hazards: Inferior Gas Cylinders are the Main Culprit
The core risk of gas springs lies in inferior gas cylinders:
- Structural Defects: Gas cylinders are filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas internally. If the screw rod, nut, or valve body slips off due to quality issues, the screw rod may be ejected by the high-pressure gas.
- Material Issues: Thin tube walls, insufficient purity of inert gas (below 90%), poor sealing, or the use of unqualified materials all reduce safety.
- Lack of Protective Devices: Chairs without explosion-proof steel plates (located below the seat surface, directly facing the axis of the gas cylinder) cannot block the ejection of the screw rod in the event of a gas cylinder malfunction.
3. Safe Selection Guide: Certification and Protection are Key
- Certification and Grade: Choose gas cylinders with safety certification stamps such as SGS, TรV, BIFMA, or EN1335; for daily home use, select Grade 3 cylinders; for individuals weighing over 90 kg or those sitting for more than 8 hours continuously, choose Grade 4 cylinders.
- Workmanship Inspection: The rod body should be smooth and uniform, free of burrs, with a bright electroplated layer and a wall thickness of no less than 2.5 mm.
- Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: Ensure that the chair is equipped with this device, which serves as the last line of safety defense.
4. Daily Use Risk Prevention Points
- Avoid Extreme Environments: Do not recline continuously for long periods in a car exposed to summer sun or near winter heating to prevent accelerated aging of seals.
- Regular Inspection: If the oil film on the rod surface continues to increase and the gas column descends faster, it indicates seal failure, and immediate replacement is required.
- Be Alert to Abnormal Sounds: If a sharp 'hissing' sound is heard during reclining, it may be a precursor to accidental triggering of the pressure relief valve, and use should be stopped immediately for inspection.
