Office Chair Seat Explosion

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair seat explosion mainly refers to the explosion of pneumatic lift swivel chairs caused by inferior pneumatic rods, with causes including overly thin walls of the pneumatic rod, impure inert gases or replacement with compressed air, and sudden temperature increases due to frequent lifting and lowering. Prevention requires attention to selection, inspection, and usage.

Causes of Explosion

The explosion risk of pneumatic lift swivel chairs is concentrated in the pneumatic rod section. Overly thin walls of the pneumatic rod reduce structural strength, making it prone to rupture under the pressure of internal high-pressure gases; impure inert gases (such as nitrogen) or replacement with compressed air increase explosion risk due to unstable chemical properties of the gases. For example, the introduction of oxygen can lead to violent reactions when exposed to high temperatures or friction; sudden temperature increases due to frequent lifting and lowering accelerate gas expansion, potentially causing explosions if the pneumatic rod has poor sealing or insufficient heat resistance in its materials.

Typical Cases

Several serious accidents have occurred historically: In 2013, Ms. Liu in Fujian Province suffered an explosion of her swivel chair, with the pneumatic rod penetrating her lower body and numerous metal fragments removed from her abdominal cavity; in 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after being impaled by the lifting rod of a pneumatic chair. According to statistics, over 40 similar incidents have occurred in China over the past few decades, all resulting in severe physical injuries and lifelong sequelae.

Preventive Measures

  1. Select reputable products: Prioritize office chairs priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications, avoiding low-priced, inferior products. According to aๆŠฝๆŸฅ (inspection) by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3% in 2020, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were substandard high- and low-temperature resistance of the pneumatic rods and the absence of explosion-proof steel plates.
  2. Inspect the quality of the pneumatic rod: Test the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting and lowering. If there is stuttering, abnormal noise, or uneven lifting, there may be issues with overly thin walls or poor sealing; ensure that a explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. This component can effectively block fragments from the pneumatic rod in the event of an explosion.
  3. Regulate usage behavior: Avoid violent operations (such as pressing or striking the seat forcefully) or unauthorized disassembly of the pneumatic rod to prevent damage to internal structures; reduce frequent lifting and lowering and avoid prolonged continuous use to prevent temperature increases.
