Office Chair Scratch Repair

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair scratch repair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the degree of the scratch and the material of the chair. Details are as follows:

I. Minor Scratch Repair

  1. Solid Wood Material: First, lightly sand the surface along the scratch direction with fine sandpaper (e.g., 400-600 grit) to remove burrs and clean up wood dust. Then, use a color-matching touch-up pen to fill in the scratch. After it dries, apply a clear varnish (e.g., polyurethane varnish) and let it air dry for more than 24 hours.
  2. Panel Veneer Process: Simply use a color-matching touch-up pen to evenly coat along the edge of the scratch, covering the damaged area. Then, gently press with a soft cloth to allow the color to penetrate the veneer texture.
  3. Panel Paint Process: For shallow scratches, directly use a matching touch-up paint pen for repair. For deep scratches, first fill in with putty (e.g., automotive putty). After it dries, sand it smooth with sandpaper, then spray on primer and topcoat sequentially, and finally polish the surface with polishing wax.
  4. General Method: Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the scratch wrapped in cloth and rub it back and forth in a circular motion with a towel for 1-2 minutes. Alternatively, use a touch-up paint pen that matches the chair's color to evenly coat along the scratch direction. After it dries, gently wipe the edges with a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of alcohol to make the repaired area blend naturally with the original paint surface.

II. Moderate Scratch Repair

  1. Solid Wood Material: Sand the scratched area until the base material is exposed. After cleaning, spray on a repair paint that matches the original paint color. After it dries, progressively sand it smooth (from 400 grit to 1200 grit) until the surface is smooth.
  2. Other Materials: If the scratch is accompanied by burrs or delamination, first use a hot glue gun to secure the loose parts, then sand them smooth. For areas with missing material, apply water-based wood filler (e.g., wood repair paste) in multiple layers, with each layer not exceeding 0.5mm in thickness. Dry and repeat until filled.

III. Severe Scratch Repair

  1. Veneer Repair: Suitable for large areas of missing material or collapse. Cut a piece of veneer that matches the original material in color and texture, adhere it with white glue or hot glue, press the edges firmly with a scraper, and sand it smooth until it aligns with the original surface after drying.
  2. Wood Filler Treatment: Apply water-based wood filler in multiple layers. After each application, dry it with a hot air gun (60-80ยฐC) for 10 minutes. Repeat 3-5 times until the scratch is completely filled. Finally, sand it with 1200-grit sandpaper and spray on a matching paint finish.

IV. Professional Repair Recommendations

If the scratch involves multi-layer structural damage (e.g., veneer peeling, base material fracture) or issues such as color mismatch or blistering after repair, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel. They can accurately match the paint color using a colorimeter and use equipment such as a dust-free paint booth to ensure the repair effect.

V. Preventive Measures

  1. Lay carpets or mats under the office chair to reduce friction damage from the chair wheels to the floor.
  2. Avoid dragging the chair when moving it; instead, lift it up. Regularly check the flexibility of the chair wheels and replace aging parts in a timely manner.
