Office Chair Not Sinking
Admin October 12, 2026
The issue of an office chair not sinking may be caused by failures in the gas lift rod, adjustment and locking mechanisms, loose connecting components, or misoperation, and can be resolved through temporary fixation, troubleshooting, or repair and replacement.

Temporary Emergency Height Fixation
If you need to quickly resolve the sinking issue, you can use the following methods:
- Raise to Maximum Height Method: Raise the chair to its highest position and then sit down slowly, utilizing the mechanical limit at the maximum travel point of the gas lift rod to temporarily fix the height. This method is suitable for cases where the gas lift rod has not completely failed, but long-term use may lead to wear of the limit structure.
- External Support Method: Use a hard material (such as a wooden block, plastic tube, or a dedicated chair height fixing ring) to pad the exposed part of the lift rod (such as between the five-star base and the seat chassis) to prevent descent through physical obstruction. Ensure that the support is stable to avoid slipping or breaking.
Troubleshooting and Simple Handling
Conduct preliminary checks for potential faults:
- Confirm Operation Method: Check if you have mistakenly used the rotary adjustment knob as the lift switch. The correct operation should be to pull up the control lever located beneath the seat (usually on the right or left side) and attempt to adjust the height while sitting.
- Tighten Connecting Components: Turn the chair upside down and check if the screws or bolts at the connections between the seat and the base, five-star base, etc., are loose. Use tools to tighten them to eliminate wobbling or sinking hazards.
- Inspect Adjustment Valve and Gas Lift Rod: Remove the seat bottom plate and observe if there is any oil leakage at the connection between the gas lift rod and the adjustment valve (indicating damage to the seal ring) or if foreign objects are blocking the adjustment mechanism. If the lift is jerky but not severe, apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to the exposed part of the gas lift rod's telescopic rod to alleviate sticking caused by impurities or slight rust.
Repair and Replacement
If the fault cannot be resolved through simple handling, professional repair is required:
- Gas Lift Rod Replacement: If the internal seal ring of the gas lift rod is worn, nitrogen gas is leaking, or it is blocked by impurities, a new gas lift rod needs to be replaced. This operation carries the risk of high-pressure gas explosion, and it is recommended to be handled by professionals. If you choose to replace it yourself, prepare tools such as a rubber mallet, pipe wrench, and lubricant, and follow safety procedures: turn the chair upside down, spray lubricant, carefully remove the old gas lift rod, install the new one, and test the lift function.
- Adjustment and Locking Mechanism Repair: If the fault originates from the adjustment handle or locking mechanism (such as damage to the internal mechanical structure, loosening or breaking of the physical locking mechanism), check and repair the damaged components or replace the relevant parts.
