Office Chair Molding

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair molding mainly includes two major directions: 3D modeling and physical mold making. The specific process and choice need to be comprehensively considered in combination with design requirements and cost budget.

I. 3D Modeling Stage

3D modeling is the foundational step in office chair molding, requiring professional software to complete the three-dimensional structural design and wire-frame optimization of the chair.

  • Commonly used software: C4D (Cinema 4D) and 3dmax (3ds Max) are mainstream choices. C4D is renowned for its intuitive operation and high rendering efficiency, making it suitable for quickly constructing complex curved surfaces; 3dmax, with its powerful modeling tools and plugin ecosystem, is widely used in the field of industrial design.
  • Modeling key points: It is essential to focus on key ergonomic areas such as the backrest curvature, seat cushion support surface, and armrest connections to ensure the model meets mechanical support requirements. The wire-frame should be evenly distributed, avoiding local density or sparsity, to provide accurate data for subsequent physical mold making.

II. Physical Mold Making Stage

Physical molds come in various types with significant price differences, requiring selection based on production scale and material requirements:

  • Silicone molds: Priced at approximately 8.3 yuan each, they are suitable for small-batch, personalized customization scenarios. For example, they can be used to make festive decorative trinkets or animal-shaped seats for resin aroma candles. However, their durability is relatively low, making them unsuitable for long-term use.
  • Injection plastic molds: Priced at approximately 180.6 yuan each, they are the mainstream production tool for restaurant chairs or furniture chairs. By injecting plastic pellets under high pressure, they can achieve high-precision, large-scale production. However, the mold development cost is relatively high, making them suitable for large-scale manufacturing.
  • Polyurethane high-pressure foaming automatic molds: Priced as high as 350,000 yuan, they are specifically designed for the polyurethane foam filling process of office chairs. These molds integrate an automated control system to precisely adjust the foam density and shape, ensuring the comfort and durability of the seats. However, they are only suitable for high-end office chair production lines.

III. Low-Cost Alternative Solutions

If the budget is limited, one can refer to the DIY ideas in the field of car seat modification:

  • Case study: Modifying the middle-row seats of a Buick GL8 into a home computer chair, with costs controlled between 300 and 500 yuan. By disassembling the original car seat frame, replacing the wheel base, and adding an adjustable headrest, the office chair function can be achieved. Although this solution is not a traditional molding process, it can meet personalized needs at a relatively low cost, making it suitable for small-scale or home use scenarios.

Summary: Office chair molding requires a balance between 3D modeling accuracy and physical mold type based on design complexity, production scale, and budget. For high-end products, it is recommended to use polyurethane foaming molds; for small to medium-scale production, injection molds can be selected; and for personalized customization, low-cost modification solutions can be explored.
