Office Chair Modeling Steps

Admin October 12, 2026

When modeling an office chair, it is necessary to choose an appropriate method based on the characteristics of the software. The common steps are as follows:

3ds Max Modeling Process

  1. Preliminary Preparation and Component Separation Clarify the purpose of modeling (such as e-commerce rendering or animation production) and determine the model accuracy requirements. Separate the chair into independent components such as the seat cushion, backrest, armrests, gas lift, and five-star base for subsequent individual processing. For example, e-commerce models can simplify details, while animation models need to add segment lines to support deformation.

  2. Basic Modeling and Structural Adjustment

    • Tubular Structures: Create an initial shape using a cube and adjust the thickness through the "shell" operation to simulate metal or plastic frames.
    • Seat Cushion and Backrest: Use a cube to determine the overall shape. The backrest needs to be adjusted for side curvature using polygon modeling, and segment lines should be added to control the smoothing effect to avoid deformation caused by subsequent smoothing modifiers.
    • Symmetry Processing: Enable the "Symmetry Modifier" to ensure that the left and right structures of the model are consistent and reduce repetitive operations.
  3. Detail Optimization and Topology Organization

    • Connection Handling: The connection between the backrest and the seat cushion should be separated into components to prevent local deformation caused by the smoothing modifier.
    • Armrests and Chassis: Adjust the details of the connectors, such as screw holes or curvature transitions, at the vertex/edge level.
    • Topology Check: Ensure that the structural lines are reasonably distributed, avoiding triangular faces or poles, and reserve space for animation or modifications.

ZW3D Modeling Process

  1. File Creation and Chair Foot Design Create a new part file and name it (such as "4-claw chair foot"). Create a work plane rotated by 45ยฐ, draw a sketch and annotate the dimensions, extrude the sketch to form the base, generate a 4-claw structure through the "Array Geometry" command, and finally use the rotation command to cut off the excess parts.

  2. Fillet and Component Addition

    • Multi-level Fillet: Apply multi-level fillets of 30mm, 5mm, and 1mm to the edges of the chair foot to simulate the rounded transitions of real products.
    • Caster Installation Holes: Create a cylinder and apply a fillet, drill a hole at the center, generate the installation hole through Boolean subtraction, and add a chamfer to enhance details.
    • Array Copy: Copy the cylinder and hole features to quickly generate the positions of other casters.
  3. Sketch Reuse Copy the sketch of the chair foot for the design of other components, such as armrests or gas lift brackets, to improve modeling efficiency.

General Modeling Principles

  • Component-by-Component Production: For complex models, it is recommended to model them independently and then assemble them for easier modification and optimization.
  • Accuracy Matching Purpose: E-commerce models can simplify structures, while animation models need to increase detail segments.
  • Software Feature Utilization: 3ds Max relies on polygon editing and modifier combinations, ZW3D focuses on curve and surface driving, and Cinema 4D requires attention to wire frame rationality.
