Leg Ache from Sitting Long Hours in an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

The leg ache from sitting long hours in an office chair can be relieved through the following methods, mainly focusing on improving blood circulation and alleviating muscle strain:

I. Improving Blood Circulation Sitting for long periods can cause the lower limb muscles to remain stationary, compressing the leg blood vessels, obstructing venous return, slowing down local blood circulation, and causing blood to accumulate in the lower limbs. Metabolic products such as lactic acid cannot be transported away in a timely manner, stimulating nerve endings and causing a sensation of soreness and numbness.

  • Stand up and move regularly: Get up and take a walk or stretch your legs every 30-60 minutes of sitting to promote blood return.
  • Ankle pump exercises: By repeatedly flexing and extending your toes, you can enhance the contraction of the calf muscles, accelerate venous blood return, and relieve leg soreness.
  • Elevate your legs: When resting, elevate your legs above the level of your heart, using gravity to assist blood return and reduce lower limb swelling.

II. Alleviating Muscle Strain When sitting for long periods, the leg muscle groups (such as the quadriceps and hamstrings) may be in a state of tension or passive elongation, leading to continuous muscle contraction or excessive stretching, causing fatigue and strain. Muscles undergoing anaerobic metabolism in an oxygen-deprived state produce a large amount of lactic acid accumulation, which in turn causes soreness.

  • Adjust your sitting posture: Ensure that your feet are flat on the ground and your knees are roughly at a right angle to your hips to avoid excessive stretching or compression of the leg muscles.
  • Leg stretches:
    • Standing stretch for the front of the thigh: Place one hand on the wall and grasp the ankle of the same side with the other hand, pulling backward to stretch the front thigh muscles for 15-30 seconds.
    • Standing stretch for the back of the thigh: Keep your back straight and slowly bend forward, trying to touch your toes with your hands to feel the stretch in the back thigh muscles.
  • Foam roller relaxation: Use a foam roller to roll over the leg muscle groups, focusing on pressing the sore areas to promote muscle recovery and lactic acid metabolism.

III. Targeted Exercises to Relieve Discomfort

  • Tightening exercise for the front of the thigh: Sit in a chair with your back straight, slowly lift one leg, flex your toes, keep it at a 90-degree angle, and then slowly lower it. This exercise can improve the laxity of the front thigh muscles and promote blood circulation.
  • Back stretch assistance: Hold onto the chair with both hands, tilt your head backward, and straighten the back leg. When you tilt your head back to the maximum extent, you will feel a stretch in your waist. Hold for 10 seconds and then switch sides. This exercise can relieve waist muscle fatigue and indirectly reduce leg discomfort.
