Office Chair Size Height & Size Standards Explained

Admin October 26, 2026

The size, height, and standards of office chairs are primarily based on the EU EN 1335 standard and general ergonomic recommendations. The core parameters include seat height, seat depth, seat width, back height, and armrest height, which need to be adapted according to the usage scenario and human body dimensions.

I. EU EN 1335 Standard Classification

The EU EN 1335 standard classifies office chairs into three categoriesโ€”A, B, and Cโ€”designed based on different body size ranges and usage scenarios:

  • Category A: Suitable for smaller body sizes or short-term usage scenarios (e.g., conference chairs). It requires clear adjustment ranges for key dimensions (seat height, seat depth, seat width, back height) to ensure users can adjust to a comfortable posture.
  • Category B: General-purpose office chairs covering medium-sized individuals, meeting daily office needs with adjustment ranges that accommodate most body sizes.
  • Category C: Designed for larger body sizes or long-term usage scenarios (e.g., designer chairs), requiring broader adjustment ranges to adapt to different body sizes and sitting postures.
Key Requirements: Manufacturers must label the chair type and specify the adjustment ranges for dimensions such as seat height and seat depth. For example, seat height adjustment should ensure that when the user's feet are flat on the ground, the angle between the thighs and lower legs is reasonable to avoid leg compression.

II. General Ergonomic Size Recommendations

  1. Seat Height: The scientific range is 40-45 cm. The adjustment principle is that when the feet are flat on the ground, the knees should form a 90-degree right angle to avoid leg suspension due to excessive height or thigh compression due to excessive low height.
  2. Seat Depth: Recommended 38-42 cm. A seat that is too short will lack support for the front of the thighs, while a seat that is too long will compress the back of the knees, affecting blood circulation.
  3. Back Height: At least 40 cm, covering the area from the waist to the shoulder blades to provide lumbar support and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
  4. Armrest Height: 20-25 cm, adjusted so that when the arms hang naturally, the elbows form a 90-degree right angle to avoid shoulder tension.

III. Office Chair Sizes for Special Scenarios

Taking auditorium chairs as an example, their dimensions need to meet collective usage requirements:

  • Seat Height: 400-440 mm, ensuring the audience's line of sight is level.
  • Seat Depth: 400-450 mm, adapting to different body sizes and sitting postures.
  • Back Height: 1020 mm, providing neck support.
  • Seat Center Distance: โ‰ฅ 580 mm, ensuring personal space comfort.

Summary: Office chair dimensions should balance general standards with personalized adjustments, with the core being to match ergonomic principles and reduce harm from prolonged sitting. When purchasing, it is recommended to prioritize adjustable models and adjust them to the best parameters based on one's height, body size, and usage scenario.
