How to Clean & Maintain Office Chair
Admin October 25, 2026
Cleaning and maintaining an office chair requires targeted operations based on the material and component characteristics. You can refer to the following steps:

I. Cleaning by Material
1. Mesh office chairs
- Daily cleaning: Gently sweep away surface dust with a soft-bristled brush or a small vacuum cleaner, avoiding excessive force that could cause deformation. Mix warm water with a small amount of neutral detergent, then use a soft, damp cloth to wipe along the fabric texture. Rinse off any remaining detergent with clean water, and finally, absorb the moisture with a dry towel or let it air dry naturally (avoid direct sunlight).
- Deep cleaning: For stubborn stains, use a specialized mesh cleaner. Spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes, then gently brush the stained area with a soft brush. Wipe with a damp cloth and let it dry.
2. Leather office chairs
- Daily cleaning: Wipe away surface dust and light stains with a slightly damp soft cloth. For oil or sweat stains, use a specialized leather cleaner. Apply a small amount of the cleaner to a soft cloth, gently wipe the stains, rinse off any residue with clean water, and finally, absorb the moisture with a dry towel.
- Deep cleaning: Regularly use a leather conditioner. Apply it to a soft sponge and gently rub the surface to prevent cracking and fading. After conditioning, wipe off any excess conditioner with a dry cloth and let the leather absorb it naturally.
3. Fabric office chairs (e.g., cotton, linen)
- Daily cleaning: Remove dust with a vacuum cleaner or a soft-bristled brush. For stubborn stains, mix warm water with a neutral detergent, then gently wipe with a soft, damp cloth, avoiding excessive pulling that could cause deformation. Rinse off any residue with clean water and let it air dry.
II. General Maintenance Tips
1. Surface cleaning
- Regularly clean dust from crevices with a vacuum cleaner or a soft-bristled brush. For stains, gently wipe with a soft cloth dampened with diluted neutral cleaner, and immediately absorb the moisture with a dry towel afterward to prevent mildew.
2. Lubrication and adjustment
- Lubrication: If the lifting or tilting function is sluggish, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricating oil to relevant components (such as the gas lift and pivot points) (avoid using cooking oil as it easily attracts dust).
- Adjustment system: Check the tilt knob on the base. If the adjustment resistance increases, open the base cover (if removable) and apply a small amount of grease to metal components like gears and springs to ensure smooth tilting and rebound. For adjustable armrests that are difficult to move, remove the armrest cover and spray a small amount of lubricant on the adjustment rod and slide channel.
3. Tightening connections
- Regularly check and tighten screws and bolts, such as those at the connections between the seat and the gas lift, the base and the gas lift, and the armrests and the seat. Use a screwdriver or wrench to secure them and prevent wobbling or abnormal noises.
4. Wheel maintenance
- Remove the wheels for cleaning. Scrape off large debris with a butter knife, then wipe stubborn stains with a damp soapy cloth. Let them dry before reinstalling. If hair gets stuck in the wheels, cut it with scissors and remove it with tweezers. When cleaning the crevices between the wheels and the base, use a cotton swab dampened with water.
5. Usage habits
- Avoid placing heavy or sharp objects on the armrests or seat to prevent deformation or scratches. When moving the chair, push or pull it gently to avoid collisions with walls or furniture that could cause frame cracking or wheel damage. Leather and fabric seats should be kept away from prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent aging and fading.
