Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 09, 2026

Inappropriate height of office chairs can be resolved through methods such as adjusting the lever, replacing the gas lift, or modifying the chair feet, while adhering to relevant height standards to accommodate different heights.

I. Lever Adjustment
Office chairs are typically equipped with a height-adjustable lever, often a black or silver metal rod located beneath or beside the seat. To adjust, lift or press down on the lever while gently pressing or lifting the seat with your body to achieve height changes. Some levers have a locking function; after adjustment, return the lever to its original position to secure the height. This method is simple to operate and suitable for most adjustable office chairs, making it the preferred solution for height issues.

II. Replacing the Gas Lift
If the lever fails or cannot meet the requirements, consider replacing the gas lift. Pay attention to the following points:

  1. Parameter Matching: When purchasing, ensure that the load-bearing capacity, diameter, and other parameters of the gas lift match those of the original chair to avoid safety hazards caused by mismatches.
  2. Operational Standards: Before replacement, release the seat pressure to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury. It is recommended to wear protective gloves and use professional tools to disassemble the old gas lift and install the new one in its original position.
  3. Professional Assistance: If you are unfamiliar with the operation, it is advisable to contact after-sales service or professional maintenance personnel to avoid damaging the chair or causing personal injury due to improper operation.

III. Adjusting the Chair Feet
For office chairs without adjustable functions, stable materials such as wooden boards or rubber pads (with a recommended thickness of no more than 5cm) can be placed under the chair feet to temporarily increase the height. Note the following:

  1. Stability: The padding must be flat and non-slip to prevent the chair from tipping over due to an unstable center of gravity.
  2. Limitations: This method is only suitable for short-term adjustments. Long-term use may affect the stability of the chair. It is recommended to prioritize adjustable chairs or replace the gas lift.

IV. Height Standards and Adaptation Recommendations
According to the national standards GB/T 3976-2014 and GB3326-1997, the seat height of adult office chairs should be between 40 and 50 centimeters (400 to 440 millimeters), with most mainstream products on the market adjustable from 360 to 480 millimeters. Specific adaptation recommendations are as follows:

  • Height of 160 centimeters: It is recommended to have a height of 42 to 43 centimeters, allowing both feet to rest flat on the ground with the thighs perpendicular to the calves when seated.
  • Height of 165 centimeters: A height of 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable, with the desktop height aligned with the elbows and the height difference between the desk and chair controlled within 28 to 32 centimeters.
  • Height of 170 centimeters: The optimal height is 45 to 47 centimeters, ensuring a comfortable sitting posture that conforms to ergonomic principles.

The height adjustment of office chairs should balance functionality and safety. It is recommended to prioritize adjustable models and regularly inspect the condition of components such as the gas lift to ensure safe use.
