Office Chair Gas Spring
Admin October 12, 2026
The office chair gas spring, also known as a gas lift, is a core component that enables modern office chairs to adjust their height. It provides support, lifting, and cushioning functions, operating based on pressure differences, and requires careful use for safety.

Functions
- Supporting Body Weight: Filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas and liquid as working media, the gas spring can stably support body weight, ensuring the safety and stability of users while seated.
- Enabling Smooth Seat Adjustment: Through convenient operation, the gas spring allows users of different heights to quickly adjust the seat height, find a comfortable sitting position, and enhance the overall user experience.
- Providing Cushioning: During the sitting process, the gas spring absorbs some pressure, reducing the impact on the spine and effectively alleviating back and neck fatigue for those who sit for extended periods, improving sitting comfort.
Principle and Construction
- Working Principle: The gas spring utilizes the pressure difference created by the different cross-sectional areas on either side of the piston rod to achieve lifting and lowering. When a user sits down, their body weight overcomes the internal pressure, causing the piston rod to descend; when standing up, the high-pressure nitrogen gas pushes the piston rod back into place. The control lever on the side of the seat acts as a valve switch; pressing it allows nitrogen gas to circulate, unlocking the lifting and lowering function, while releasing it locks the height.
- Internal Construction: From the outside in, the gas spring consists of a stand tube (outer shell), a cylinder tube (inner tube), a piston with a piston rod, and a top seal. The cylinder tube is divided by the piston into two interconnected gas chambers, with high-pressure nitrogen gas sealed inside to provide power, ensuring the normal operation of the gas spring.
Safety Precautions
- Purchasing Safety: Prioritize products from reputable brands and check if they have passed authoritative safety certifications, such as the BIFMA test by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association in the United States. Pay attention to safety features like explosion-proof steel plates to reduce usage risks.
- Usage Safety: Avoid frequent and vigorous lifting and lowering operations. Refrain from sitting or standing up abruptly or using knees or other body parts to bump against the chair. Never disassemble the gas spring yourself, as its internal pressure is extremely high, and non-professional operation can easily lead to danger.
- Regular Inspection: If you notice unexplained slow sinking of the chair, signs of oil leakage, or abnormal noises, stop using it immediately and contact a professional to ensure safety.
