Office Chair Explosion Risk
Admin October 12, 2026
The term 'office chair explosion risk' refers to the phenomenon where pneumatic lift office chairs explode due to component defects, potentially causing serious personal injury and requiring high attention to prevention.

Causes and Risks of Explosions
Such incidents mostly occur in low-quality pneumatic rod products, with core causes including:
- Structural defects in the pneumatic rod: Thin tube walls lead to insufficient pressure resistance, and impure inert gases or replacement with compressed air can easily trigger internal pressure imbalances.
- Sealing issues: Uninstalled or aging sealing rings cause gas leakage or external air entry, creating an unstable pressure environment.
- Improper use: Frequent lifting and lowering cause internal friction and heat generation in the pneumatic rod, and a sudden temperature increase may trigger violent gas expansion.
- Lack of safety design: Failure to install explosion-proof steel plates or insufficient plate thickness (requiring โฅ2 millimeters) prevents blocking explosion fragments from penetrating the seat cushion.
According to a 2020 inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, with 17 batches of swivel chairs having issues such as substandard high- and low-temperature resistance of the pneumatic rods and missing explosion-proof steel plates, directly posing explosion risks.
Typical Accident Cases
- 2007, Zhoushan, Zhejiang: Ms. Lou's chair exploded, piercing the seat and embedding fragments up to 10 centimeters into her body.
- 2009, Jiaozhou, Shandong: A 14-year-old boy was killed when the pneumatic chair he was adjusting exploded, with the rod piercing his buttocks and causing excessive blood loss.
- 2015, Xiamen, Fujian: Ms. Liu's lifting chair exploded while she was browsing the internet at home, with parts piercing her buttocks and requiring emergency surgery for removal.
- 2017, Anhui: An office chair explosion damaged a computer case,่ฝ็ถๆฒกๆ็ดๆฅไผคไบบ but exposing safety hazards in public places.
Preventive Measures
- Purchase genuine products: Prioritize chairs priced over 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard) and avoid buying 'three-no' products.
- Check pneumatic rod performance: Lifting and lowering should be smooth without jamming; if there are abnormal noises or uneven resistance, there may be internal structural damage.
- Confirm explosion-proof steel plate: Press the connection between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod with your hand; if you feel a hard metal plate (thickness โฅ2 millimeters), it meets safety requirements.
- Avoid rough use: Reduce frequent lifting and lowering operations, and prohibit using the chair as a climbing tool or bearing weights exceeding its design load.
