Office Chair Explosion
Admin October 19, 2026
An office chair explosion primarily refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon caused by component defects in pneumatic lift swivel chairs, mostly occurring in low-quality pneumatic rod products.

Causes of Explosion
- Thin Wall of the Pneumatic Rod: To reduce costs, low-quality pneumatic rods may use metal materials with thin walls, resulting in insufficient compressive strength. When the internal pressure exceeds the limit that the metal tube can withstand, the wall will rupture, causing an explosion.
- Insufficient Purity of Inert Gas or Replacement with Compressed Air: Regular pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen or other inert gases to reduce oxidation reactions. If filled with compressed air (containing oxygen), oxygen will react with the metal components inside the pneumatic rod, accelerating part aging and generating heat. As pressure and temperature rise, the metal tube may explode due to thermal expansion or excessive pressure.
- Frequent Lifting Leading to Sudden Temperature Increase: Pneumatic rods achieve lifting through piston movement. Frequent operation intensifies internal friction, causing a rapid temperature increase. If the material of the pneumatic rod has poor heat resistance, high temperatures may weaken its structural strength, increasing the risk of explosion.
- Air Leakage in the Pneumatic Rod (Relatively Low Probability): Poor sealing of the pneumatic rod leads to gas leakage, which may cause internal pressure imbalance. However, such cases are relatively rare and are usually accompanied by abnormal lifting or strange noises.
Typical Cases
- In 2013, while sitting on a purchased lift swivel chair to blow-dry her hair, Ms. Liu experienced a pneumatic rod explosion. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through her body, and dozens of metal fragments were removed from her abdomen and intestines.
- In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod pierced into his body while adjusting a pneumatic chair.
- In 2007 in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, and in 2017 in Anhui, seat explosion incidents occurred, resulting in property damage or personal injuries.
Preventive Measures
- Choose Regular Products: Prioritize brands priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications, and avoid purchasing low-priced, low-quality pneumatic rods.
- Check Pneumatic Rod Performance: During trial use, ensure smooth lifting without stuttering or strange noises. If lifting is difficult or there is friction sound, there may be a risk of wall wear or gas leakage.
- Confirm Installation of Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: Regular products install an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โฅ2 millimeters between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to block explosive fragments. When purchasing, you can request structural explanations from the merchant or check it yourself.
