Office Chair Easily Moves Backward
Admin October 13, 2026
An office chair that easily moves backward may be caused by issues with core components, the tray, adjustment mechanisms, loose screws, or problems with the gas lift rod, and can be resolved through targeted repairs or adjustments.

Core Component Failures
- Broken Lock Spring: If the spring inside the lock breaks, the backrest will not stay fixed. You need to remove the decorative panel at the bottom of the backrest, take out the broken spring, and replace it with an identical one.
- Worn Chassis Lock Catch: If the lock catch on the chassis becomes worn or deformed from long-term use, you need to purchase a new catch of the matching size for replacement.
- Loose Electric Adjustment Motor: For office chairs with electric adjustment functions, if the motor's fixing screws are loose, the stability of the backrest will decrease. When repairing, unplug the power supply first, then tighten the motor screws.
Tray Issues
- Detached Welding or Cracks on the Tray: If the tray has detached welding or cracks due to poor welding or external impact, it can cause the backrest to tilt backward. Note that the high temperature generated during welding can damage the gas lift rod (the gas lift rod must never be exposed to high temperatures). Therefore, structural damage (such as detached welding on the tray or cracks in the support frame) must be replaced entirely and cannot be repaired by welding.
Adjustment Mechanism Issues
- Gas Lift Rod Adjustment Type: Pull up the adjustment handle under the seat, lean back to the desired angle, and then release the handle to lock it in place. If the handle is stuck, repeatedly pull it and gently pat the backrest to release the mechanical lock.
- Knob Adjustment Type: Turn the knob clockwise to tighten the backrest and return the chair to an upright position; turn it counterclockwise to loosen the angle. When adjusting, keep the knob pressed or pulled while leaning forward to use gravity to help the backrest rebound.
Loose Screws
- Check if the screws connecting the chassis and the backrest are loose. If they are, use tools to tighten them to ensure all components are securely connected.
Gas Lift Rod Issues
- Gas Lift Rod Leakage: If the gas lift rod leaks air, the backrest will not stay in a fixed position. Check the airtightness of the gas lift rod. If there is structural damage (such as air leakage or deformation), replace it with a new one.
Maintenance Tips: Before operating, ensure the chair is in a stable position to avoid accidental tipping due to loose components. If repairing electric components, be sure to cut off the power supply first. If you are not familiar with the internal structure, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
