Office Chair Collapse

Admin October 09, 2026

The collapse of office chairs is usually caused by problems with components such as fillers, support structures, mesh fabrics, and gas cylinders. Details are as follows:

  • Filler problems: The commonly used filler sponge in office chairs will experience compression and permanent deformation after long-term use. Just like an old mattress, once the sponge collapses, it cannot bounce back. The support surface that originally evenly distributed the pressure on the buttocks completely disappears, causing the seat cushion of the chair to collapse. This is because during the repeated application of force, the internal structure of the sponge is gradually damaged and cannot return to its original shape and elasticity.

  • Support structure problems: The support structures at the bottom of the chair, such as frames, springs, and elastic cord pull ropes, if they age or are damaged, will cause the entire seat cushion to lose support. For example, if the frame material is of poor quality or deforms due to long-term stress, the springs lose their elasticity, and the elastic cord pull ropes become loose, all of these can lead to collapse. These support components are crucial for maintaining the shape and stability of the chair. Once problems occur, the chair cannot properly bear the weight of the human body.

  • Mesh fabric problems:

    • The raw material of the mesh fabric is of low quality. For example, the recycled chemical fiber ordinary mesh fabric used in low-end chairs has poor fiber toughness, insufficient tensile force, a sparse weaving density, and weak tensile resistance. After long-term exposure to the weight of the human body, it is easily stretched and deformed.
    • The frame of the seat cushion is made of thin material and has an insufficient arc. In cheap models, the frame walls of the backrest and seat cushion are thin and the material is brittle, making them prone to slight deformation under stress. If the frame arc does not have a tensile pre-tightening design, the mesh fabric cannot be tightly stretched when installed. When a person sits down, the frame undergoes slight deformation, and the mesh fabric is pulled larger accordingly. Over time, it naturally becomes loose and wrinkled.
    • The assembly process is shoddy. Small workshops do not tighten the mesh fabric during installation and do not perform tensile shaping. The product may look fine when it leaves the factory, but after a few months of sitting, it gradually becomes loose and sags.
    • The auxiliary sponge layer is reduced in configuration. In low-priced models, the buffer cushion layer is omitted, and all the weight is placed on the mesh fabric. Under long-term single-point pressure, it is prone to local depression and loosening.
    • The seat surface size design is unreasonable. If the seat cushion is too wide and has a large span, the suspended area of the mesh fabric is large, and the tensile force it bears is multiplied. It is more likely to be stretched and deformed than a regular-sized one.
  • Gas cylinder problems: For lifting chairs, if there are signs of oil leakage in the gas cylinder, the lifting function is not smooth, there are jams or automatic descents, it may also lead to problems related to chair collapse. The gas cylinder is the core component of a lifting chair, and its performance directly affects the stability and safety of the chair.
