Office Chair Central Rod

Admin October 22, 2026

The central rod of an office chair usually refers to the gas spring rod. After it breaks, it generally does not explode, but safety precautions are necessary. If you need to disassemble the central rod and wheels, you can use specific tools or methods.

Safety of a Broken Gas Spring Rod

The core component of the central rod of an office chair is the gas spring rod, which is usually filled with high-pressure gas (such as nitrogen) to achieve lifting and lowering functions. However, if the gas spring rod breaks due to aging, quality issues, or external impact, the internal gas may be released rapidly, but an explosion will not occur. The reasons are as follows:

  1. Gas properties: Regular gas spring rods are filled with inert gases (such as nitrogen), which have stable chemical properties. When the rod breaks, the gas will only escape quickly and will not cause combustion or an explosion.
  2. Structural limitations: The outer shell of the gas spring rod is made of metal. When it breaks, the shell may deform but will not shatter into sharp fragments, reducing the risk of secondary injury.
However, it should be noted: If the gas spring rod is of poor quality (such as using inferior gas or having poor sealing), when it breaks, it may be accompanied by a gas-jetting sound or metal friction sound. In this case, you should immediately move away from the chair to avoid being scratched by high-speed ejected components.

Methods for Disassembling the Central Rod and Wheels

If you need to replace the wheels or repair the gas spring rod, follow these steps:

  1. Basic preparation: Turn the chair upside down so that the bottom faces up. Ensure that there is sufficient operating space and that the ground is flat to prevent the chair from sliding.
  2. Disassembling the wheels:
    • Method 1: Grab the wheel frame (the metal part that connects the wheel to the central rod) directly with your hand and pull it out vertically. If the wheel is stuck, you can lightly tap the edge of the wheel frame with a rubber mallet to loosen the connection using vibration.
    • Method 2: Use a special tool (such as a three-jaw puller used for motor repairs). Fix the tool's claws on the inside of the wheel frame and apply an outward pulling force by rotating the central screw to gradually push out the wheel.
  3. Disassembling the central rod:
    • If there are screws or buckles at the connection between the central rod and the chair seat, first loosen the fasteners with a screwdriver or wrench.
    • If the central rod is directly inserted into the chair seat, you can lightly tap the top of the central rod with a rubber mallet to separate it from the chair seat; or use a motor repair tool (such as a long-handled screwdriver) to support the end of the central rod from the bottom and push it out upwards with force.

Operation tips: It is recommended to wear gloves during the disassembly process to avoid scratching your fingers with metal components. If you encounter stubborn connections, you can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to help loosen them.
