Office Chair Caster Replacement

Admin October 13, 2026

The replacement of casters on an office chair can be carried out following the steps below:

I. Preparation
Lay the office chair flat on the ground to ensure sufficient operating space and that the chair will not slide. If the chair has a complex structure, first observe how the casters are connected to the chair legs to determine if there are screws or other special mechanisms securing them. Some casters may have rusted springs due to long-term use, so prepare lubricating oil or rust remover in advance to assist with disassembly.

II. Removing Old Casters

  1. Direct Pull Method:
Old casters are usually secured in the drop holes of the chair legs by springs. Grasp the base of the caster with your hand and pull evenly outward in the opposite direction of the force core (i.e., perpendicular to the caster's rotating axis). You will need to overcome the resistance of the spring when pulling. If the resistance feels significant, gently shake the caster to loosen the spring.
  2. Tool-Assisted Method:
If the spring is severely rusted or the caster is too tightly fitted to the chair leg, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the caster and the chair leg and slowly pry along the edge of the caster to disengage the spring from the drop hole. Control the force when prying to avoid scratching the chair leg or damaging the caster mounting hole.

III. Installing New Casters

  1. Aligning the Holes:
Align the mounting shaft of the new caster with the drop hole of the chair leg, ensuring that the caster's direction matches the chair's movement direction (e.g., swivel casters should maintain 360ยฐ rotation freedom).
  2. Pressing In Vertically:
Press the caster in vertically along the direction of the hole using your hand or a tool (such as a rubber mallet) until the bottom of the caster is fully flush with the surface of the chair leg. Maintain even pressure during installation to prevent the caster from tilting, which could prevent the spring from engaging properly. If pressing in is difficult, gently rotate the caster to assist with installation.

IV. Inspection and Testing
After installation, stand the chair upright and manually push it to test whether the casters rotate smoothly. Check for any sticking, unusual noises, or looseness. If any issues are found, the casters need to be removed and repositioned or replaced with new ones.

Precautions:

  • Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratching your fingers or coming into contact with rusted parts.
  • If the casters are secured with screws, use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to remove the screws. Pay attention to the tightening force when installing.
  • Regularly clean dust from the casters and the drop holes in the chair legs to extend the service life of the casters.
