Office Chair Caster Positioning

Admin October 11, 2026

Positioning the casters of an office chair requires three steps: flipping the chair, locating the installation points, and securing the casters. Here are the specific operations:

Step 1: Flip the chair to ensure a stable working surface Turn the office chair upside down so that the legs face upward, providing a clear view and stable support for subsequent operations. To prevent scratches on the chair legs or the floor, place a soft cloth (such as an old towel or foam pad) between the chair legs and the contact surface. If the chair is heavy, it is advisable to have two people work together to flip it to prevent the chair from slipping or being damaged due to one-handed operation.

Step 2: Locate the caster installation points to ensure symmetrical distribution Use a tape measure to measure the dimensions of the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center positions of the casters. The key principle is to ensure that the four wheels are arranged in a rectangular shape, with equal diagonal lengths (for example, if the distance between the chair legs is 40cm ร— 30cm, the diagonal should be approximately 50cm). If the markings are offset, the chair may wobble or be unevenly stressed after installation. Use a pencil or marker to make clear marks on the bottom of the chair legs for easy alignment later.

Step 3: Secure the casters and choose tools according to the material

  • Soft chair legs (such as wooden ones): Secure them directly with self-tapping screws. Align the center hole of the caster with the marked point, insert the self-tapping screw vertically with a screwdriver, and rotate it clockwise until the base of the wheel is fully flush with the chair leg. The threaded design of the self-tapping screw can penetrate the wood on its own, eliminating the need for pre-drilling.
  • Hard chair legs (such as metal ones): Drill holes first and then secure them. Use a drill bit that matches the diameter of the screw (usually 0.5-1mm smaller than the screw diameter) to drill a hole at the marked point, with a depth slightly greater than the length of the screw. After drilling, clean up the debris, insert the screw into the center hole of the caster, and screw it into the chair leg to ensure that the base is tightly attached without gaps.

Precautions:

  1. Keep the screws vertical during installation to prevent the wheels from rotating poorly due to tilting.
  2. If the casters have a braking function, confirm that the brake pads are facing the correct direction (usually marked with 'LOCK').
  3. After installation, flip the chair back and give it a gentle push to test whether the wheels rotate smoothly and whether the chair is stable.

By following these steps, you can ensure accurate positioning of the casters on the office chair, enhancing comfort and safety during use.
