Office Chair Cannot Rise
Admin October 09, 2026
Over 90% of the failures causing an office chair to be unable to rise are due to a malfunctioning gas lift. Here are the common causes and solutions:

Gas Lift Issues
- Gas Lift Pressure Loss: Leakage of internal nitrogen gas or aging of the seal ring results in the inability to provide lifting support. Solution: Replace the gas lift with one that meets the national GB/T 2280 standard and has safety certification (costs a few dozen yuan). Steps: Turn the chair upside down on a stable surface; if it can barely rise, raise it to the maximum height; gently tap the connection points between the bottom of the gas lift and the base, and the top and the seat cushion with a rubber mallet to loosen them; when installing the new gas lift, insert it into the center hole of the base and press down vertically on the seat cushion until you hear a 'click' sound or feel a tight fit.
- Gas Lift Locked: During transportation, a new chair may have its gas lift locked in the lowest position due to collisions. Solution: Try repeatedly pressing the lift control handle or gently tapping the top of the gas lift to release the locked state.
Mechanical Failures
- Handle Displacement: The control handle detaches from the metal pin at the top of the gas lift, preventing the switch from being triggered. Solution: Turn the seat upside down, check if the end of the handle touches the pin; if misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the fixing screws on the base.
- Mechanical Interference: Accumulation of grease or dust in the base hinders the rebound of the pin. Solution: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and repeatedly press the handle until the pin rebounds smoothly.
- Other Mechanical Damage: Such as a stuck lift handle, loose or broken connections between the five-star base or base, or damaged internal springs. Solution: Feel the resistance by pressing and rotating the control button, and observe if there are any air leakage sounds or metal friction sounds; check if the connection between the base and the seat cushion is wobbly to distinguish between a gas lift problem or a mechanical structural failure.
Other Temporary Solutions
- Using a Hose Clamp: After adjusting the chair to the desired height, turn it upside down, wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder (you can wrap a rubber band or tape to increase friction), tighten the clamp and secure the screws. If it slips, use a rubber strip to reinforce it.
- Using PVC Pipe: Measure the diameter of the cylinder and the length of the desired height, purchase a PVC pipe with a diameter of 1.5 inches (3.8 cm), split it lengthwise and clamp it onto the cylinder; if you don't have tools, keep the pipe intact, remove the wheels and slip the pipe over.
