How to Recline the Backrest of an Office Chair
Here's how to recline the backrest of an office chair:

Step 1: Locate the Adjustment Components The adjustment buttons or levers on an office chair are usually located on the side of the seat near the connection to the backrest, beneath the seat, or integrated into the armrests. Common types include round knobs, levers, and push-button mechanisms. Some high-end models may have adjustment keys designed on the surface of the armrests. If the chair is equipped with a cable-controlled switch, check its connection to the small gas cylinderโthe cable-controlled switch is the core component for controlling the backrest angle, while the small gas cylinder is responsible for support and locking. If either is damaged or loose, it may cause the adjustment to fail.
Step 2: Operate the Adjustment Components
- Lever/Button Type: Pull up or press down on the adjustment component while slowly leaning back with your body. The backrest will change its angle due to gravity or manual force. Some models require continuous pressing of the button to unlock the angle.
- Knob Type: Rotate the knob clockwise or counterclockwise (some may need to be pulled up first to unlock). After adjusting to the desired angle, release the knob, which will automatically lock. If there is excessive resistance during rotation, it may indicate that the internal gears are stuck, and you should check for damage.
- Special Design Type: Some office chairs require you to first flip the adjustment handle (usually located beneath the seat), rotate it slightly to return the backrest to its initial position. After reclining the backrest, adjust the tilt range using the lever beneath the right armrest, and then fine-tune the backrest height by rotating the black cylinder (gas cylinder control end) in front of the seat.
Step 3: Confirm the Locking Status After adjustment, gently push the backrest to test its stability. If there is no sliding or abnormal noise, the locking is successful. If there is wobbling, recheck whether the adjustment components are fully reset or if there are any faults with the cable-controlled switch or small gas cylinder.
Precautions
- Ensure the chair is placed on a flat surface before adjustment to avoid operational errors or damage to components due to tilting.
- Avoid applying excessive force, especially to plastic adjustment components, as overexertion may cause breakage.
- If the backrest cannot be adjusted, first check if the connection between the cable-controlled switch and the small gas cylinder is loose, or contact after-sales service for repair.
By following these steps, you can safely and effectively recline the backrest of your office chair.
