Office Chair Armrest Selection

Admin October 12, 2026

When choosing office chair armrests, it is essential to focus on adjustability, material and craftsmanship, and functional suitability. Here are the key points:

Adjustability is the core indicator The more adjustable dimensions there are, the wider the range of applicable scenarios and the higher the comfort level for the elbows. 3D armrests (adjustable up and down, forward and backward, and left and right) represent the basic form of ergonomic chairs. Currently, the highest configuration on the market is 6D armrests, which offer significant improvements in adjustability, material quality, and comfort. However, be cautious of some brands' over-hyped '8D' armrests, which may have redundant functions or lack practicality. For example, the additional rotation angles or telescoping functions of some 8D armrests may become useless due to complex operation or low usage frequency.

Material and craftsmanship determine durability and tactile feel

  • Material selection: Polyurethane (PU) foam armrests are the preferred choice. They combine a soft tactile feel with supportive toughness, have a fine surface that is not cold to the touch, and are wear-resistant, weather-resistant, and acid- and alkali-resistant. They are less likely to crack or deform after long-term use. This material can better absorb the pressure from the arms, reducing fatigue caused by prolonged resting.
  • Craftsmanship standards: The polyurethane integral foam molding process requires one-time forming, with a dense skin layer on the surface and a uniform microporous structure inside. The raw material ratio, mold temperature control, and pouring technique directly affect the density, resilience, and appearance of the finished product, which is the key to distinguishing between ordinary processing factories and professional manufacturers. Poor craftsmanship may result in rough armrest surfaces, easy collapse, or insufficient resilience.

Functional suitability should be combined with usage scenarios

  • Height adjustment: Follow the 'right-angle positioning method'. First, adjust the seat height so that your feet are flat on the ground and your knees are bent at 90 degrees. Sit up straight with your upper arms hanging naturally. When your elbows are bent at 90 degrees, measure the vertical distance from the tip of your elbows to the seat surface (usually 20-25 cm). Adjust the armrests to fully support the weight of your arms without raising or lowering your shoulders. If the armrests are non-adjustable and too high, you can use a 3-5 cm cushion. If they are too low, you may need to remove them or use a footrest under the seat to level them.
  • Forward and backward adjustment: After adjusting the height, push the armrests so that the elbow bending point is vertically aligned with the edge of the desk, ensuring that your forearms rest naturally and your wrists lie flat on the desk while operating the mouse and keyboard. If the armrests cannot be adjusted forward and backward, you can compensate by adjusting the distance between the seat and the desk: sit up straight and extend your arms so that your fingertips just touch the edge of the keyboard, which is the appropriate distance.
  • Width adjustment: When your arms hang naturally, the distance between your elbows should be the same as your shoulder width. Adjust the inner sides of the armrests to fit snugly against the outer sides of your upper arms, with a gap of no more than 2 cm. People with a larger build should choose armrests that are 3 cm wider than their shoulder width, while those with a smaller build can choose models with an inward-retracting function to avoid shoulder abduction or restricted movement that may cause strain.

Type selection should match needs The basic version of synchronized armrests has a fixed position and is suitable for users with a limited budget or low adjustment requirements. The advanced version of 2D armrests supports up and down adjustment and can meet basic height adaptation needs. For a more flexible user experience, it is recommended to choose armrests with 3D or higher adjustment dimensions.
