Office Chairs and Their Types

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs are chairs equipped for convenience in daily work and social activities, coming in various types, with a development history and quality safety requirements.

Types

  • By broad and narrow definitions: In a narrow sense, they refer to backrest chairs used for desk work in a sitting position; in a broad sense, they include all chairs used in offices, such as executive chairs and staff chairs.
  • By functional uses:
    • Office swivel chairs: Equipped with rotation and height adjustment functions, they belong to the category of office supplies and include series such as executive chairs, mid-level chairs, and staff chairs. Executive chairs have high backrests and come standard with armrests; staff chairs have low backrests and no armrests. The core components include seat cushions, backrests, five-star bases, casters, and pneumatic height adjustment systems. Height is adjusted via pneumatic rods, while elastic supports and rollers enable rotation buffering and movement locking.
    • Executive chairs: Symbolizing authority, they are a symbol of power in the office. Typically wrapped in top-grain leather, filled with high-density foam, and featuring metal frames, they can bear weights exceeding 150 kilograms and have heights of over 90 centimeters. They are used for business receptions and short-term office work.
    • Staff chairs: Pursuing efficiency, they are commonly found at employee workstations in open office areas. Made of mesh or PU materials, they are lightweight, breathable, and cost-effective, with basic pneumatic height adjustment functions. They provide basic sitting support for most employees and meet the demands of an eight-hour workday.
    • Ergonomic chairs: Protecting health, they are like custom-made support systems. Adjustable in multiple dimensions such as lumbar support, seat depth, armrests, and recline angles, they dynamically adapt to body curves, relieving pressure on the lumbar and cervical spine. Some high-end models feature gravity-sensing posture reminders and waterfall-edge seat cushion designs.

Development History

The earliest prototype of an office chair can be traced back to the forward-tilting wooden chairs of ancient Egypt around 1900 BC. In 1849, Thomas Warren invented and produced the first truly modern office chair in history, featuring rotation, sliding, and elastic soft seat surfaces. Since 2000, China's office chair industry has developed through OEM models, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, China's office chair production reached 177 million units, with exports of 84.64 million units. The industry is showing a trend towards intelligence, with some products integrating pressure sensors, health monitoring, and APP control functions. The market size for hydraulic lift swivel chairs is expected to exceed 16 billion yuan by 2025.

Quality and Safety

On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada initiated a recall of office chairs made in China due to the risk of backrest breakage, which could lead to falls. Twelve reports had been received, including ten injuries.
