Office Chair and Floor

Admin October 13, 2026

Office chairs may cause damage to floors, but this can be effectively avoided by reasonably selecting wheel materials and taking protective measures.

Impact of Wheel Materials on Floors

The degree of damage that different wheel materials cause to floors varies significantly. Hard plastic wheels are hard in texture, smooth on the surface but lack elasticity. When rolling on hard floors such as wooden floors and tiles, the tiny sand particles or dust trapped on the wheel surface can act like sandpaper, easily leaving fine scratches on light-colored floors. Soft PU wheels are wrapped with soft polyurethane material on the outer layer. When rolling, they have a gentle contact with the ground, are less likely to scratch the floor, have good sound-damping effects, and are less likely to create dents, making them the top choice for floor protection.

Methods for Protecting Floors

  • Replace the wheels: Replace hard plastic wheels with high-quality soft PU wheels to reduce damage from the source. When replacing, pay attention to the interface size (usually 11mm or 10mm pin-type). The operation is simple; just use a screwdriver to pry off the old wheels and insert the new ones.
  • Add protective measures:
    • Wheel protectors: Wrap the original hard wheels to make them move quietly and smoothly, avoid scratching the floor, and also prevent hair, fluff, and other debris from getting tangled in the wheel axles.
    • Lay special floor mats: Choose high-density, smooth, scratch-resistant, and wear-resistant PVC transparent floor mats with a thickness of 5 - 8mm. The surface layer has textures that guide the smooth rolling of chair wheels, and the bottom layer has good anti-slip and ground-gripping capabilities. You can also choose office chair-specific PVC or polycarbonate transparent floor mats with a thickness of more than 2mm and beveled edges.
    • Lay soft rubber carpets or blankets: Soft pads or blankets with a diameter of more than one meter and a thickness of about 2 centimeters can protect the floor and are easy to clean and replace when dirty.
  • Consider alternatives: For scenarios where the office position does not need to be moved or where extremely high floor protection is required, fixed non-wheeled office chairs can be used, but they will lose the height adjustment function and mobility convenience.
  • Regular maintenance: Flip the chair over every month to clean the debris tangled in the wheel axles and gaps, wipe the wheel surface stains with alcohol wipes, and if possible, use an air gun to blow out the dust deep in the wheel axles. In environments with a lot of fluff, clean it every two weeks. At the same time, simply vacuum or mop the floor every day to reduce sand particles on the ground.
