Office Chair and Desk Height

Admin October 14, 2026

The appropriate heights of office chairs and desks should be determined based on ergonomic principles, with specific standards as follows:

Office Chair Height

The seat height of an office chair should be adapted to the height of the user's calves to ensure that the feet rest naturally on the ground and the thighs are parallel to the ground. According to national standards, the seat height range for office chairs is 40 to 50 centimeters, with a recommended height of 40 to 45 centimeters for ordinary adults. In practical applications, men often use 43 centimeters as the adjustment benchmark, while women use 41 centimeters. This height range can meet the sitting needs of most adults, avoiding foot suspension due to a chair that is too high or thigh compression due to a chair that is too low.

Desk Height

The height of a desk should match the height of the user's elbows to maintain a natural and relaxed upper limb posture. The recommended desk height for ordinary adults is 70 to 75 centimeters. This standard is designed based on the average height of the elbows from the ground when standing, ensuring that after sitting down, the user's elbows can naturally bend at 90ยฐ to 100ยฐ, and the forearms can rest flat on the desk without shrugging or bending forward, thereby reducing fatigue in the shoulders, neck, and waist.

Height Difference Between Desk and Chair

The height difference between the desk and chair is a key factor affecting sitting comfort. The reasonable height difference between the desk and chair should be controlled within 280 to 320 millimeters (i.e., 25 to 30 centimeters). If the height difference is too small (e.g., less than 25 centimeters), the user needs to bend over or lean forward to reach the desk, which can easily lead to increased lumbar pressure over time; if the height difference is too large (e.g., more than 30 centimeters), it may force the shoulders to lift up, causing shoulder and neck pain. The specific height difference can be calculated using the formula: desk height - chair seat height = 25 to 30 centimeters. For example, if the chair seat height is 43 centimeters, the desk height should be 68 to 73 centimeters to maintain comfort when the arms are placed naturally.

Adjustment Recommendations

In practical use, the heights of the desk and chair can be fine-tuned according to the user's body type. For example, taller individuals can appropriately increase the heights of the chair seat and desk, but must ensure that the feet can still rest flat on the ground; shorter individuals need to lower the heights to avoid foot suspension. In addition, if the chair has armrests, the height of the armrests should be level with the desk to reduce fatigue caused by upper limb suspension. By scientifically matching the heights of the desk and chair, sitting comfort can be effectively improved, and the risk of musculoskeletal diseases can be reduced.
