Feeling Nauseous While Lying on an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

Symptoms of nausea while lying on an office chair may be caused by various factors such as positional vertigo, cervical spine compression, or improper chair design.

Firstly, it may be related to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a type of vertigo closely associated with changes in body position. When the body's position changes, the balance organs in the inner ear are stimulated. The inner ear is an important organ for perceiving balance in the human body. Once stimulated abnormally, it sends incorrect balance signals to the brain, causing the brain to misjudge the body's balance state, thereby triggering momentary dizziness and nausea. This type of vertigo usually occurs during specific changes in body position, such as quickly lying down from a sitting position or rapidly turning the head, with symptoms being more pronounced but generally short-lived.

Secondly, cervical spine issues are also an important factor. If the office chair is poorly designed, such as when the height or curvature of the backrest does not match the physiological curvature of the human cervical spine, prolonged lying on it may lead to compression of the cervical spine. The cervical spine is a crucial structure connecting the head and torso, with important tissues such as the spinal cord, nerves, and blood vessels passing through it. When the cervical spine is compressed, it affects the normal function of these tissues, leading to blocked nerve conduction and poor blood circulation, thereby causing symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. In severe cases, it may also be accompanied by neck pain and arm numbness.

In addition, long-term use of an inappropriate reclining office chair can also indirectly cause physical discomfort. For example, situations such as a stiff backrest angle or a lying posture that does not conform to the body's curves can place the spine in an unnatural curved state, increasing the burden on the spine. The spine is an important supporting structure of the human body. Prolonged exposure to excessive pressure can affect its normal physiological function, leading to muscle tension and spasms around the spine, which in turn affects blood circulation. When blood circulation is poor, various organs in the body do not receive adequate oxygen and nutrient supply, making it easy to experience symptoms such as dizziness and nausea.
