How to Remove the Headrest of an Office Chair
Admin October 08, 2026
There are mainly two methods for removing the headrest of an office chair: using tools and manual removal. The specific operations are as follows:

Removal Using Tools
- Prepare tools: Prepare appropriate tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers in advance. These tools are crucial for unscrewing and removing nuts during the disassembly process.
- Invert the office chair: Steadily invert the office chair so that the headrest faces downward. This makes it easier to locate the screws and nails at the connection part of the headrest.
- Unscrew the screws: Carefully observe the connection between the headrest and the chair back. After finding the screws and nails, use a wrench to unscrew the screws in a counter-clockwise direction. Some screws may be tight and require appropriate force, but be careful not to damage the screws or surrounding components.
- Remove the nuts: For some models of office chairs, in addition to screws, there are nuts that secure the headrest at the connection. In this case, use a screwdriver to remove the nuts. When removing the nuts, ensure that the size of the screwdriver matches that of the nuts to avoid slipping.
- Separate the headrest and the chair back: After completing the above steps, gently shake the headrest to confirm that all screws and nuts have been removed. Then, separate the headrest from the chair back.
Manual Removal
- Locate the connection part: Carefully observe the connection between the headrest and the chair back to check for any decorative buttons or leather coverings.
- Open the coverings: If there are decorative buttons or leather, use your fingers or a small tool (such as a small screwdriver) to carefully open these coverings until you can see the specific structure of the connection.
- Pull the headrest: After seeing the connection, gently pull the headrest. Since there may be some friction between the headrest and the chair back, some force may be required. During the pulling process, ensure an even force to avoid damaging the headrest or the chair back due to excessive force.
- Remove the headrest: Keep pulling the headrest until it is completely removed from the chair back.
Operation precautions: During the process of removing the headrest of an office chair, be sure to operate carefully to avoid damaging components or causing safety accidents. If you are unsure about the disassembly process, it is recommended to seek the help of professionals.
