How to Remove an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

The disassembly of an office chair should be carried out according to standardized steps. Here are the specific methods:

I. Preliminary Preparation

Before starting the operation, wear protective gloves to prevent scratches from metal parts during disassembly. If the office chair is equipped with a pneumatic rod, let the chair stand still for 1 hour to ensure that the internal high-pressure gas is fully released, avoiding accidents caused by gas pressure impact during operation.

II. Separate the Seat from the Backrest

  1. Locate the connecting screws: Observe the connection position between the lower part of the backrest and the seat, and find the connecting screws that fix the two (this step is not required for some integrated backrests).
  2. Unscrew the screws: Use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to unscrew all the fixing screws counterclockwise.
  3. Separate the components: After the screws are completely removed, gently lift the backrest to detach it from the seat. If there is a snap-fit structure at the connection, press the snap-fit simultaneously to unlock it.

III. Remove the Armrests

  1. Locate the fixing points: The armrests are usually fixed to both sides of the seat with 2-4 screws, and some designs may be hidden under the decorative covers on the inner sides of the armrests.
  2. Remove the screws: Use a screwdriver to unscrew all the fixing screws. If the screws are rusted, you can spray rust remover to assist in the operation.
  3. Take off the armrests: After the screws are removed, the armrests can be taken off as a whole. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the seat.

IV. Separate the Pneumatic Rod from the Base

  1. Invert the chair: Completely invert the chair so that the base faces upwards, making it easier to observe the connection structure between the pneumatic rod and the base.
  2. Loosen the fixing device:
    • Snap-ring fixing: Use needle-nose pliers to clamp the snap-ring and pull it outwards to release the locking of the pneumatic rod.
    • Screw fixing: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws at the connection part.
  3. Separate the pneumatic rod: Lift the pneumatic rod vertically and shake it slightly left and right. If it gets stuck, you can inject WD-40 rust remover and let it stand for half an hour, or use a hair dryer to heat the base to 60ยฐC to soften the epoxy resin adhesive for auxiliary separation. Be careful not to hit it violently to prevent the outer thin steel tube of the pneumatic rod from being damaged and causing the oil seal to fail.

V. Remove the Casters

The casters are usually directly snapped onto the caster seats on the base and can be pulled out with a relatively large force. If they are stuck and cannot be removed, you can use a screwdriver to pry the edges of the casters to gradually separate the snap-fit structure.

VI. Handle Residual Components

Use needle-nose pliers to clamp out the plastic washers stuck in the holes of the base to ensure that there are no residues that may affect subsequent assembly or recycling. Scrap pneumatic rods should be handed over to metal recycling agencies for professional treatment to avoid environmental pollution caused by random disposal.

Precautions:

  • If the screws are rusted during disassembly, prioritize using rust remover instead of violent destruction.
  • The pneumatic rod may contain residual high-pressure gas, so it must stand still sufficiently before operation.
  • All metal parts should be stored separately for subsequent recycling or maintenance.
