How to Place Office Chairs

Admin October 19, 2026

The placement of office chairs should be comprehensively considered based on space utilization, functional requirements, and Feng Shui principles. Here are the specific methods:

I. Space-saving Placement Methods

  1. Vertical Chair Placement
When leaving work or being away from the seat for a long time, fully push the chair under the desk, ensuring the backrest is flush with the desk edge. This method can free up aisle space, prevent the chair from occupying public areas, and is especially suitable for open-plan offices or small workstations.

  2. Flexible Storage of Folding Chairs
If the office allows, choose folding chairs with wheels. When meetings or temporary space is needed, they can be quickly folded and pushed to a corner or under the desk, reducing the occupation of fixed areas and improving space utilization.

  3. 45-Degree Oblique Push Method
When the chair is not in use, push it obliquely under the desk at a 45-degree angle. This angle avoids the chair taking up too much space when fully horizontally placed and makes it convenient to quickly pull it out and sit down next time, balancing efficiency and space optimization.

  4. Vertical Space Utilization
Install hooks on the side of the desk to hang lightweight chairs (such as plastic chairs or folding chairs). This method can completely free up floor space and is suitable for areas beside file cabinets or walls without decorations. However, note that the weight of the chair should match the load-bearing capacity of the hook.

II. Feng Shui and Functional Considerations

  1. Avoid Facing the Door or Windows Directly
A chair facing the door directly is prone to external disturbances (such as people walking by), and facing the window directly may affect attention due to direct sunlight or airflow. It is recommended to adjust the direction of the chair to ensure there is stable support behind (such as a wall), forming a "backing" pattern to enhance career support.

  2. Reduce Face-to-face Disturbances
If the seat needs to face a colleague in front, use potted plants, file cabinets, or screens to separate them to avoid the psychological pressure caused by direct eye contact. At the same time, ensure there is no moving line (such as a corridor) directly in front to prevent others from frequently walking by and distracting attention.

  3. Avoid Asymmetric Aisle Cutting
The placement of chairs should avoid being asymmetrically divided by aisles or seats, as this may affect the smoothness of personal energy fields and team collaboration harmony. For example, avoid placing the chair at the intersection of a "T"-shaped aisle or being "cut" by other seats from the side.

  4. Match Positions with Seat Hierarchy
Adjust the distance of seats from the door according to the workplace hierarchy: those in higher positions should have seats further back, and ordinary employees should be arranged in order according to their position levels. This layout not only conforms to management logic but also reduces the psychological pressure on employees in lower positions.

  5. Stay Away from Electromagnetic Radiation Sources
Keep a certain distance (recommended to be more than 50 centimeters) between the chair and electronic devices such as computers and printers to reduce electromagnetic wave exposure. If there is a window behind, use curtains or green plants to buffer to avoid the lack of "backing" support.
