How to Move Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The way to move office chairs depends on their type and design features, which can be divided into the following four categories:

1. Regular ergonomic office chairs
These chairs are usually equipped with gas cylinders or sliding rails. To move them, first locate the circular knob or lever at the connection point between the chair body and the legs at the bottom of the chair (some models are located directly below the seat). Stand to the side of the chair and press and hold the knob with one hand to maintain pressure. At this time, the locking mechanism of the chair will be released, and you can push it forward or backward along the floor to adjust its position. After adjusting to the appropriate distance, release the knob, and the spring device of the gas cylinder or sliding rail will automatically lock the chair in the new position. Note: Maintain your body balance during the pushing process to avoid the chair tipping over due to excessive force.

2. Five-star-based office chairs with casters
These chairs move via five swivel casters with brakes at the bottom, making the operation the simplest. To move them, simply step on the casters lightly with your feet to unlock them (some models require you to press the brake pads in the center of the casters simultaneously), and then apply a slight push to slide freely. Key precautions: Clear the ground debris before pushing to prevent wires, paper scraps, etc., from getting stuck in the gaps between the casters; move at a low speed to avoid colliding with table corners or equipment; regularly check the flexibility of the casters after long-term use and add lubricant if necessary.

3. Some old-fashioned fixed-leg office chairs
These chairs have non-adjustable fixed legs. Before moving them, you need to loosen the fixing screws at the connection point between the legs and the seat (usually located at the four corners at the bottom of the seat). Use a wrench to rotate the screws counterclockwise to a slidable state. After adjusting the position, re-tighten the screws and confirm the tightness. Special reminder: Be sure to consult the product manual before operation to confirm the position of the screws and the tightening torque requirements; if the chair has wooden or plastic parts, avoid using excessive force to prevent structural damage.

4. Office swivel chairs
These chairs integrate rotation, height adjustment, and movement functions and mainly rely on the swivel casters at the bottom for movement. Before pushing, ensure that the chair is at the lowest height (adjusted via the gas cylinder) and check that the caster brakes are released. During the movement, you can use the 360-degree rotation function of the chair to adjust the direction. After reaching the position, raise the chair via the gas cylinder or step on the caster brakes to fix it. Safety tips: Maintain a stable center of gravity when rotating to avoid dizziness caused by rapid rotation; apply force evenly during height adjustment to prevent the gas cylinder from suddenly rebounding.
