How to Lower an Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

The methods for lowering an office chair vary depending on its adjustment type, as detailed below:

Pneumatic Adjustment (Most Common)

Pneumatic adjustment is the most prevalent height adjustment method in current office chairs, with the following operational steps: First, sit steadily on the chair, ensuring that both feet touch the ground and body weight is evenly distributed. This is to maintain balance during the adjustment process and avoid falling due to an unstable center of gravity. Next, reach under the right side of the seat to locate the height adjustment lever, typically a long lever. Some chairs may have two levers, so it is necessary to carefully distinguish between the height adjustment and the backrest recline adjustment functions. Then, grasp the adjustment lever with your hand and gently lift it upwards. At this point, you will feel the lock on the pneumatic rod being released. Lift your body slightly and keep the lever lifted, relying on your body weight to slowly and steadily sink down, and the chair will descend accordingly. When the seat reaches the desired height, where both feet can be fully placed flat on the ground, release the lever, and the height will be locked.

Mechanical Adjustment (Screw/Rotary Type)

For office chairs with mechanical adjustment, to lower the height, first locate the adjustment knob or the screw with a fixing function, which is usually at the center or side of the chair base. Generally, rotating the knob clockwise lowers the height (usually following the principle of 'tighten right, loosen left', but clockwise rotation is often used for lowering). For old-style chairs with fixing screws, first use a tool (such as a wrench) to loosen the screw counterclockwise. While rotating the knob or loosening the screw, manually press the seat down to the desired height. For models fixed with screws, after adjustment, be sure to tighten the screw clockwise again to secure it, ensuring that the chair will not pose safety hazards due to looseness during use.

Inflatable Type

Adjusting an inflatable office chair is relatively simple. Locate the knob on the gas rod and rotate the chair clockwise to lower its height.

Other Operational Tips

For some office chairs, when lowering them, sit on the chair or press down hard on it with your hands, then lift the found chair handle, and the chair will lower. There is also a saying that you can find a wave device under the chair, sit on it, and press directly, and the chair will descend. However, these methods may vary depending on the brand and model of the chair, so it is best to check the chair's user manual before use.
