How to Lower an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

There are several methods to lower an office chair, depending on its type. Choose the appropriate operation based on your chair:

1. Standard Office Chair (with Support Rod Handle) These chairs typically have a regulating handle on the support rod (the part connecting the seat to the five-star base). To adjust, sit on the chair or press down on the seat with your hand to apply some weight to the chair. Then, lift the handle on the support rod, and the seat will naturally descend due to gravity. If it doesn't descend, gently shake your body up and down to assist in the adjustment. Once you reach the desired height, release the handle to secure it in place.

2. Pneumatic Office Chair (Gas Cylinder Adjustment) Pneumatic chairs control height through compressed air in the gas cylinder. To adjust, locate the knob or circular regulating device at the top of the gas cylinder. Turn the knob clockwise to lower the seat height and counterclockwise to raise it. Maintain your balance during adjustment to avoid losing balance due to height changes. If the knob is tight, wrap your palm around it to increase friction.

3. Swivel Chair with Handle Under the Seat Some swivel chairs have a horizontal handle under the seat. To adjust, turn the handle upward and keep it lifted while sitting on the chair. This prevents the high-pressure air in the gas cylinder from rebounding, allowing the seat to descend slowly. Once you reach the target height, release the handle to lock the position. If the height isn't fixed after releasing the handle, check if the handle is fully returned to its original position or if the gas cylinder is damaged.

4. Swivel Chair with Fixed Screw at the Bottom Older swivel chairs may have a fixed screw at the center of the five-star base at the bottom. To adjust, invert the chair or lean over to observe the bottom, and use a wrench to loosen the screw. Manually adjust the seat to the desired height, then tighten the screw again to secure it. Pay attention to the tightness of the screw to avoid a wobbly chair if it's too loose or difficulty in adjustment if it's too tight.

5. Dual-Lever Swivel Chair Some high-end swivel chairs are equipped with two regulating levers under the seat, controlling height and lateral movement separately. To adjust the height, sit on the chair, find the lever marked with "up" and "down" arrows or "H" (Height), and lift the handle until the seat begins to descend. Release the handle once you reach the desired height. If the height isn't locked after releasing the handle, repeat the operation or check if the regulating lever is stuck.

6. Chair with Dual Handles If the chair has two handles underneath, determine the height-adjusting handle through repeated attempts (usually marked with "โ†‘โ†“" symbols). Once found, maintain a sitting position and lift the handle. The seat will descend with gravity. Adjust to the desired height and release the handle. The other handle is usually for adjusting the backrest angle, so avoid confusion during operation.

Precautions:

  • Ensure the chair is placed on a flat surface before adjustment to avoid ineffective adjustment or falling due to tilting.
  • If the chair height cannot be adjusted, it may be due to air leakage in the gas cylinder, damage to the regulating mechanism, or jamming of internal parts. Contact after-sales service for repair.
  • Avoid applying excessive force during adjustment to prevent the handle or gas cylinder from breaking.
