How to Install a Backrest Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

The installation of a backrest office chair can generally be carried out according to the following steps, and specific operations should be adjusted according to the type of chair:

1. Prepare Accessories and Tools Before installation, confirm that all accessories are complete, including chair legs, casters, chassis, seat, gas lift, backrest, armrests, headrest, and matching screws and nuts. Also, prepare tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches. Some vertical-panel backrest chairs may require an electric drill for auxiliary fixation. After checking that the accessories are not damaged or missing, clean the installation area to ensure the floor is level.

2. Install Casters and Chair Legs Align each caster with the mounting holes on the chair legs and press firmly until fully engaged to ensure each caster is securely installed. If the casters are screw-fixed, tighten the screws with a screwdriver. After installation, insert the gas lift vertically into the center hole of the chair legs, ensuring that the bottom of the gas lift fits snugly against the chair legs to avoid tilting and subsequent instability during installation.

3. Secure the Chassis to the Seat Place the chassis on the bottom of the seat, align the screw holes, and then insert screws from the bottom of the seat through the holes in the chassis. Tighten the screws with a wrench or screwdriver. Pay attention to the orientation of the chassis. Usually, the front and back positions are marked on the chassis and should match the design of the seat. Some chairs have adjustment buttons on the chassis; ensure these buttons face outward during installation for easy operation later.

4. Connect the Backrest to the Seat Align the connecting rod or buckle of the backrest with the mounting slot on the back of the seat and gently press or rotate until fully engaged. If the backrest is fixed with screws, tighten the screws with a screwdriver to ensure a secure connection between the backrest and the seat. Special attention for vertical-panel backrest chairs: When installing, adjust the direction of the backrest according to the orientation of the armrests. After inserting the backrest into the slot on the seat panel, tighten the nuts with an electric drill or screwdriver to prevent loosening.

5. Insert the Gas Lift and Assemble the Whole Chair Lift the assembled unit of the backrest and seat vertically and slowly insert it into the top of the gas lift, ensuring a complete fit at the connection. Avoid applying lateral force to prevent damage to the gas lift or tilting of the chair. After insertion, gently press down on the seat to test whether the lifting function of the gas lift is normal.

6. Install Armrests and Headrest Align the armrests with the mounting holes on both sides of the seat according to their design and fix them with screws. If the armrests are adjustable, install the adjustment components and test their flexibility. The headrest is usually fixed to the top of the backrest with buckles or screws; align the position and press or tighten the screws.

Precautions:

  • Keep all components vertical during installation to avoid instability due to tilting.
  • Tighten the screws with moderate force; over-tightening may damage the threads, while under-tightening may cause loosening.
  • After installation, test whether the chair's lifting, rotation, and backrest adjustment functions are normal, ensuring there are no abnormal noises or jams.
  • If the chair comes with an instruction manual, refer to the manual steps first, as there may be differences among different brands or models.
