How to Determine the Size of Office Chair Height
Admin October 08, 2026
When determining the size of an office chair based on height, the core reference standard is that the seat height should be within the range of 400-500 millimeters (40-50 centimeters), and adjustable models are preferred, with a recommended adjustment range of 38-48 centimeters.

I. Core Standards for Seat Height and Ergonomic Fit
According to national standards and ergonomic design, the seat height of an office chair for adults must meet two key conditions:
- Basic Height Range: The seat height should be controlled within 400-500 millimeters (i.e., 40-50 centimeters). This range is based on statistical data on the length of the lower limbs of adults and can cover the needs of most adults. If the seat height is too low, it will cause the knee bending angle to be too large, compressing blood vessels and nerves; if it is too high, it will make the feet hang in the air, increasing the burden on the leg muscles.
- Adjustability Priority: Due to significant individual height differences (e.g., among people ranging from 1.6 meters to 1.9 meters in height), it is recommended to choose an office chair with an adjustable seat height, with an adjustment range of 38-48 centimeters being ideal. The adjustable function can be fine-tuned to accommodate different heights, ensuring that when sitting down, the thighs are basically parallel to the ground, the feet are flat on the ground, and a palm's thickness (about 2-3 centimeters) can be easily inserted under the thighs, which is an intuitive way to judge whether the seat height is appropriate.
II. Requirements for the Height Difference between Seat Height and Work Surface
The seat height needs to form a reasonable difference with the height of the desktop (work surface) to maintain a natural and relaxed arm posture for work:
- Standard Difference Range: The height difference between the seat and the work surface should be controlled within 280-320 millimeters. If the difference is too small (e.g., below 280 millimeters), it will cause the arms to be raised, straining the shoulder and neck muscles; if the difference is too large (e.g., exceeding 320 millimeters), it will cause the arms to droop, increasing the pressure on the elbows.
- Dynamic Adaptation Principle: An office chair with an adjustable seat height can be adjusted to match different work surface heights. For example, when using a height-adjustable standing desk, the seat height can be adjusted simultaneously to keep the arm bending angle between 90-110 degrees, reducing fatigue from long-term office work.
III. Seat Height Selection Recommendations for Special Scenarios
- Short People (e.g., those under 1.6 meters in height): If the seat height is not adjustable, choose a model with a seat height close to 38 centimeters and use a footrest to avoid having the feet hang in the air.
- Tall People (e.g., those over 1.9 meters in height): Prioritize choosing a model with a seat height adjustment upper limit of 48 centimeters to ensure that the thighs are parallel to the ground and avoid excessive knee bending.
- Long-term Office Work Scenarios: Even if the height is moderate, it is recommended to choose a chair with an adjustable seat height so that the height can be fine-tuned according to changes in sitting posture (e.g., leaning forward or backward) to distribute body pressure.
