How to Assemble an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

Follow these steps to assemble an office chair, ensuring proper operation for safety and stability:

1. Verify Component Completeness Before assembly, check that all parts are present, typically including chair legs (usually five-star), casters (universal wheels), gas lift (height adjustment mechanism), base (the part connecting the seat to the gas lift), seat, backrest, armrests, headrest, and matching screws and brackets. If any key components (such as the gas lift or fixing screws) are missing, contact the seller for replacements before proceeding with assembly.

2. Install from Bottom to Top

  • Attach Chair Legs and Casters: Align each of the five casters with the corresponding holes on the chair legs and press down firmly until fully seated, ensuring the wheels rotate freely without wobbling.
  • Secure the Gas Lift: Insert the bottom of the gas lift into the center hole of the chair legs, keeping it vertical. The gas lift is the core component for adjusting the chair's height; check for scratches or air leaks on its surface.
  • Connect Seat and Base: Place the base on the bottom of the seat and use four long screws to secure it through the base holes into the threaded holes pre-set in the seat. Tighten symmetrically and gradually to prevent the base from tilting.
  • Assemble Backrest and Seat: Align the bottom of the backrest with the connecting brackets at the rear of the seat and secure with screws. Some chairs use a snap-fit structure; listen for a โ€œclickโ€ to confirm proper engagement.
  • Integrate Seat with Gas Lift: Align the assembled seat (including backrest) with the top of the gas lift and press down firmly until fully inserted, ensuring tight contact between the base and gas lift.
  • Install Armrests and Headrest: Depending on the armrest design, secure them to the sides of the seat with screws (usually 2-3 screws per side); attach the headrest to the top of the backrest using snaps or screws, adjusting to a comfortable height.

3. Key Precautions

  • Gas Lift Safety: Avoid using gas lifts without 3C certification or of poor quality to prevent explosion risks; adjust the height while seated and move slowly.
  • Screw Tightening: All screws should be tightened until they cannot be turned by hand to prevent loosening and chair wobbling after prolonged use.
  • Load Test: After assembly, sit on the chair and gently rock it to check that all components are securely connected and that the wheels roll smoothly.

4. Handling Special Cases If the chair design includes a headrest gas lift or adjustable armrests, refer to the instructions to adjust to the appropriate positions; some chairs require installing the armrests before connecting the backrest, in which case follow the โ€œseat-armrests-backrestโ€ sequence. If holes do not align or parts are stuck, do not force assembly; check for incorrect or missing parts.
