How to Assemble an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

An office chair is primarily composed of a metal frame, leather and foam components, and various functional accessories, with its assembly process covering three core stages: frame construction, upholstery processing, and overall assembly.

I. Metal Frame Construction

The metal frame serves as the supporting structure of the office chair and requires step-by-step construction. First, steel tubes are bent into the bottom cushion frame, and steel bars are welded in the middle for installing the seat adjustment mechanism. Then, steel springs are hung to form the seat suspension net, and metal rods are clamped onto the springs to enhance stability and support. The welding of the backrest frame should be completed according to the drawings, including lumbar support, armrest sections, and other accessories, ensuring compliance with ergonomic design. For some executive chairs, the backrest may adopt a steel frame or plastic frame combined with mesh fabric, while the base is commonly made of metal and equipped with a mechanical explosion-proof mechanism to ensure safety.

II. Leather and Foam Component Processing

The upholstery directly affects the comfort of the seat. The leather should be laid flat on the cutting table and cut into the shapes of the seat, backrest, and side panels according to the template. The foam filling should be selected based on different densities for different parts: harder foam is used for the seat cushion to maintain its shape, while softer foam is used for the backrest to enhance fit. The cut leather and foam should be sewn together, and pleats should be pinched at specific positions to form decorative thread patterns. Finally, the sewing of the seat backrest, side panels, and contour covers should be completed separately. Executive chairs offer a wider variety of fabric choices, including hemp, mesh, or leather, which should be matched according to design requirements.

III. Functional Accessory Assembly and Overall Assembly

After the metal frame and upholstery components are completed, the installation of functional accessories begins. The backrest frame should first have a layer of cardboard added, then be covered with foam, and finally wrapped in leather. The sliding plate assembly is installed beneath the seat cushion to support front-to-back position adjustment. The hydraulic cylinder is connected to an aluminum base to enable height adjustment and 360-degree rotation. After inserting PA-material universal chair wheels, the seat can move flexibly. Additionally, the armrests of executive chairs may feature 3D lifting and rotation functions, with the height adjustment range of the pneumatic rod reaching up to 80mm. The chair legs are usually made of nylon to enhance load-bearing capacity. Finally, the headrest is installed to complete the overall assembly.

The composition of an office chair should balance structural strength, ergonomics, and functional diversity, with the material selection and assembly precision of each component directly affecting the user experience and lifespan.
