How to Adjust the Height of Office Chairs
Admin October 10, 2026
The method for adjusting the height of office chairs varies depending on the type of chair, and specific operations should be selected according to the chair type. Here are operation guides and precautions for common types of adjustable-height chairs:

I. Ordinary Adjustable Chairs (Pneumatic Rod Type)
Operation Methods
- Hand Control Device: Look for the control lever under or on the side of the seat (usually a metal or plastic rod). If seated, simply pull up the control lever and hold it; your body weight will assist in lowering the seat. If you need to raise the seat, stand up and pump the control lever upward (repeatedly push it up and down) or keep pulling it up; the seat will rise as the pneumatic rod inflates.
- Knob Adjustment: Some models require turning the knob under the seat. Rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the height, and tighten the knob to secure the position after adjustment.
- Standing Adjustment Method: If adjusting the sitting position is difficult, stand up and place the front of the chair under your knees. Use the control lever to adjust the height until your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the ground.
Precautions
- Avoid applying excessive force during adjustment. Control the movement range within a few centimeters each time to prevent damage to the pneumatic rod due to rapid inflation or deflation.
- If the pneumatic rod fails (e.g., it cannot rebound), it may be due to aging of the seals or insufficient air pressure. You can purchase a pneumatic rod of the same model (costing about 30 yuan) and replace it yourself without discarding the chair.
II. Electric Adjustable Chairs
Operation Methods
- Operate through the control panel on the side of the seat or a remote control, usually equipped with "Up" and "Down" buttons. Press the corresponding button, and the motor drives the push rod to extend or retract, adjusting the seat height.
- Some models support preset height memory functions, allowing you to set your preferred sitting height in advance and switch with one button.
Precautions
- Ensure a stable power connection and avoid using in humid environments to prevent short circuits.
- After long-term use, check for looseness at the connections between the motor and the push rod to prevent abnormal noises or jamming.
III. Screw-Type and Fixed-Position Adjustable Chairs
- Screw-Type: Adjust the height by rotating the seat or base, using a self-locking screw mechanism to secure the position. Apply even force during adjustment to avoid jamming.
- Fixed-Position Type: Lock the connection between the chair legs and the seat with screws. Use a tool to loosen the screws, manually adjust the height, and then retighten the screws to ensure structural stability.
IV. Safety and Comfort Recommendations
- Assisted Adjustment: If the chair has armrests, adjust the height or temporarily remove them to avoid obstructing your knees from sliding under the desk.
- Dynamic Sitting Posture: Change your sitting posture every 15-30 minutes, such as briefly leaning forward or adjusting the chair's center of gravity, to reduce spinal pressure.
- Foot Support: If the chair is too high, use a footrest to support your feet, keeping your thighs parallel to the ground and preventing poor blood circulation.
