How Office Chairs Rotate

Admin October 19, 2026

The rotation of office chairs is usually achieved through a rotating mechanism at the bottom of the seat. Here are the specific operating steps:

Unlock the Locking Switch

The rotating locking device of most office chairs is located beneath the seat for the convenience of users. Users can reach under the seat to find a round or wrench-shaped adjustment lever. The shape and position of the adjustment lever may vary slightly depending on the brand and model of the office chair, but it is generally in a conspicuous and easily accessible position beneath the seat. Once the adjustment lever is found, lift it upwards or pull it outwards according to its design. When lifting upwards, a certain amount of force is usually required, but it should not be excessive to avoid damaging the adjustment lever. When pulling outwards, pay attention to the extent of the pull to ensure that the rotation lock of the seat is completely released. Once the operation is correct, the seat is now in a freely rotatable state.

Adjust the Rotation Angle

After the seat is unlocked, the rotation angle can be adjusted. There are two common methods to achieve this operation. One method is to hold both sides of the seat surface with both hands to maintain body balance and stability while better controlling the force and direction of rotation. Then, gently apply force in the desired direction of rotation. The force should be even and slow to avoid sudden exertion that could cause the body to lose balance or damage the office chair. Through this force application method, the seat and the roller base can be rotated together to adjust the seat to the appropriate angle. Another method is to use the body's center of gravity in combination with even force application. The user can slightly tilt their body's center of gravity in the desired direction of rotation while rotating the chair body clockwise or counterclockwise. This method is more natural and smooth, allowing for better control of the rotation speed and angle.

Lock the Rotation Position

After adjusting the seat to the appropriate angle, the rotation position needs to be locked to ensure that the seat does not slide or shift randomly during use. If the seat was previously unlocked by lifting the adjustment lever upwards, release the adjustment lever now to allow the locking switch to reset. During the resetting process, ensure that the locking switch is completely reset so that the current rotation angle is firmly fixed. If the seat was unlocked by pulling the adjustment lever outwards, after releasing the adjustment switch, the catch will automatically spring back and grip the base to complete the position fixation. During the catch's spring-back process, you can slightly feel whether the seat is firmly fixed. If there is any looseness, you can adjust it again and confirm whether the catch is securely fastened.
