GCC Office Chair
GCC office chairs refer to ordinary office chairs designed for adults aged 12 and above. Exporting to the United States requires a GCC certificate to demonstrate compliance with federal safety regulations. Here are the specific details:

Scope of Application
GCC certification applies to chairs designed specifically for adults in home or office settings, covering various types of adult daily-use/office furniture such as solid wood, panel, iron, glass, and computer chairs. It is strictly prohibited to include children's office chairs or study chairs (designed specifically for children aged 12 and below) within the scope of GCC certification. Such products must obtain a CPC children's product certificate, and the two cannot be mixed.
Core Testing Items and Standards
Chemical Safety Testing
- CPSIA Coating Lead and Phthalate Testing: For surface coatings on chair seats, frames, and hardware, the lead content limit is โค90ppm (in accordance with 16 CFR Part 1303); plastic accessories (such as armrests and foot covers) need to control phthalates to avoid excessive plasticizer levels.
- TSCA Title VI Formaldehyde Emission Testing for Wood-Based Panels: If density boards, particle boards, etc., are used, they must meet EPA limits (hardwood plywood โค0.05ppm, medium-density fiberboard โค0.11ppm, particleboard โค0.09ppm); otherwise, the goods may be rejected by customs.
Structural and Mechanical Safety Testing
- Load-Bearing and Stability Testing: Simulate daily sitting and leaning scenarios, as well as heavy object placement, to test the firmness of table legs, chair legs, and connectors.
- Adjustable Gas Lift and Caster Testing: Verify the safety of gas lifts and the durability of casters.
- Folding Structure Strength Testing: For the opening and locking mechanisms of folding chairs.
- Sharp Edge Detection: Polish sharp edges to reduce the risk of bumps and injuries.
Certificate Issuance and Responsibility
- For office chairs produced by overseas factories, the U.S. importer (IOR) issues the GCC certificate, and the importer is fully responsible for the authenticity of the test report and product compliance.
- U.S. domestic manufacturers can issue the certificate themselves.
Electronic Declaration and Document Management
Starting from July 8, 2026, importers need to complete electronic filing of GCC information through the customs ACE system; undeclared goods will be detained. GCC certificates and test reports must be retained for at least 5 years to respond to CPSC inspections, platform audits, or safety incident traceability.
Importance of Certification
GCC certification is a necessary condition for exporting adult office chairs to the United States. It can reduce losses from returns and exchanges, enhance brand image, and help companies expand into international markets and strengthen product competitiveness.
