Dismantling Office Chair Backrest

Admin October 11, 2026

Dismantling an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the connection type. Here are the common types and their operating steps:

I. Snap-Button Backrest (Common in Simple Office Chairs)

  1. Locate the Snap Buttons: Flip the chair and place it upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet). Look for plastic snap buttons (usually white or black) on both sides of the bottom of the backrest or beneath it.
  2. Unlock the Snap Buttons:
    • Press the elastic part of the snap button directly with your hand while pulling the backrest outward.
    • If the snap button is tight, use a screwdriver to assist in pressing it. Be sure to place a cloth between the screwdriver and the plastic part to avoid scratches.
    • Some snap buttons need to be lifted upward first and then pulled out horizontally (such as the white snap buttons on the sides of certain models).
  3. Separate the Backrest: Once the snap buttons are unlocked, simply lift the backrest upward to complete the dismantling.

II. Screw-Fixed Backrest (Common in Solid Wood/Metal Frame Chairs)

  1. Expose the Screws:
    • Check the plastic covers on the bottom of the seat or the inside of the backrest and pry them open with a screwdriver.
    • For high-end models, you may need to remove the decorative covers (such as the leather panels on executive chairs) to see the hidden screws.
  2. Unscrew the Screws:
    • Use the corresponding tool (a Phillips or Allen screwdriver) to unscrew all the fixing screws in order.
    • Keep small parts like washers to avoid losing them and affecting subsequent installation.
  3. Separate the Structure: After the screws are completely loosened, lift the backrest upward or pull it outward according to the design. For some models, you may need to tilt the seat first before separating (such as when the backrest is connected to the seat cushion via a hinge).

III. Gas-Lift-Connected Backrest (Common in Ergonomic Chairs)

  1. Identify the Gas Lift Location: The backrest is connected to the seat base via a gas lift. Some gas lifts have adjustment knobs on the side or bottom.
  2. Unlock the Gas Lift:
    • Adjust the backrest to a vertical position and turn the knob to the 'unlock' position (some models may require long-pressing or multiple rotations).
    • If the gas lift is covered by the base panel, you need to remove the panel first (pry open the snap buttons or unscrew the fixing screws with a screwdriver).
  3. Pull Out the Backrest: Grasp both sides of the backrest evenly and pull upward with force, using theไผธ็ผฉๆ€ง (telescoping property) of the gas lift to complete the separation.

IV. General Precautions

  1. Safe Operation:
    • For electrically adjustable seats, disconnect the power first to avoid injury caused by accidental triggering.
    • For gas-lift models, no additional deflation is required; just operate directly.
  2. Handling Rusty Parts: If the snap buttons or screws are rusty, spray rust remover and wait for 5-10 minutes before dismantling.
  3. Part Management: Keep children away during dismantling and store screws, washers, etc., separately (e.g., in small containers).
  4. Refer to the Manual: For branded office chairs, it is recommended to consult the 'Dismantling Guide' in the manual first to avoid operational errors due to model differences.

Tip: If the connection method between the backrest and the seat is special (such as the central turntable of a swivel backrest chair), you can refer to the method for dismantling car seat trim panels: insert a long flat-head screwdriver into the gap and lift upward to separate the side hooks.
