Depreciation of Desks and Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

The depreciation periods for desks and office chairs vary depending on the nature of the organization and the usage scenario. For enterprises, office chairs have a depreciation period of 5 years, while for administrative and public institutions, office desks and chairs have a depreciation period of no less than 15 years. For student desks and chairs, a reference period of 5 years is typically used, but adjustments are made based on actual damage conditions.

Depreciation Period in Enterprise Scenarios

According to Article 60 of the Implementation Regulations of the Enterprise Income Tax Law, the statutory depreciation period for enterprise office furniture (including office chairs) is 5 years. This regulation applies to profit-oriented enterprise units, and their depreciation calculations must comply with tax law requirements to ensure the compliance of financial data. Enterprises typically calculate depreciation using the straight-line method, which involves allocating costs annually at a certain proportion (e.g., 20%) of the original value of fixed assets until depreciation is complete.

Depreciation Period in Administrative and Public Institutions

In administrative and public institutions, the depreciation management of fixed assets is implemented in accordance with Government Accounting Standard No. 3 - Fixed Assets. This standard explicitly stipulates that the depreciation period for furniture assets (including office desks and chairs) is no less than 15 years. This standard reflects the long-term and stable use of assets in the public sector, and the depreciation method may adopt the straight-line method or the workload method, depending on the actual usage of the assets. For example, frequently used office chairs may have their actual service life shortened due to accelerated wear and tear, but accounting treatment must still adhere to the minimum 15-year depreciation period.

Depreciation Reference for Student Desks and Chairs

The depreciation period for student desks and chairs typically references 5 years, but the actual replacement cycle is dynamically adjusted based on damage conditions. When managing such assets, educational institutions such as schools need to comprehensively consider factors such as student usage frequency and maintenance conditions. For example, if desks and chairs are scrapped in advance due to human damage or natural aging, asset disposal can be carried out in advance; if well-maintained, the service life may be extended to 8-10 years. This flexibility reflects the uniqueness of educational asset management, which requires balancing cost control with teaching needs.

Underlying Reasons for Differences in Depreciation Periods

The differences in depreciation periods across different scenarios are essentially the result of coordinating asset usage objectives with financial rules. Enterprises pursue rapid cost recovery to optimize their income statements, hence adopting shorter depreciation periods; administrative and public institutions focus on the long-term service capabilities of assets, thus setting longer depreciation periods; educational institutions need to balance teaching continuity with resource utilization efficiency, hence adopting intermediate values and retaining adjustment space. This tiered management mechanism not only complies with accounting standard requirements but also adapts to the actual needs of different entities.
