Deflating the Bottom of an Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

The following steps can be followed to deflate the bottom of an office chair:

1. Locate the deflation port or adjustment mechanism
The deflation port of the gas cylinder is usually located at the bottom or side. Common forms include:

  • A small button at the bottom: Some chairs release air directly by pressing the button;
  • A small hole or adjustment mechanism on the gas cylinder: Requires the use of tools;
  • A dedicated adjustment valve: Some high-end chairs are equipped with a rotatable adjustment mechanism.

2. Prepare tools
Select tools based on the type of deflation port:

  • Allen wrench: Suitable for small holes or adjustment mechanisms on the gas cylinder, with common sizes ranging from 3-6 millimeters;
  • No tools required: If the deflation port is a button, operate it directly with your hands.

3. Perform deflation

  • Button-type deflation port:
    Place the chair on a stable surface, press the bottom button with your finger, and the air will be released slowly, causing the chair to descend. Keep your body away from the gas cylinder during operation to avoid accidents caused by high-pressure air ejection.
  • Small hole or adjustment mechanism:
    Move the chair to a safe area, ensuring there are no fragile items around. Stand beside the chair, insert the Allen wrench into the small hole or adjustment mechanism of the gas cylinder, and turn it counterclockwise slowly. The air will gradually be released, and the chair will descend. Control the rotation speed during the process to avoid sudden chair drops caused by rapid air release.

4. Monitor air pressure changes
During deflation, observe the chair's descent speed and sitting comfort:

  • Stop deflating when the chair descends to the target height or feels comfortable to sit on without a sudden sinking sensation;
  • If the air pressure is too low, the chair may not be able to support your weight, and it will need to be reinflated or adjusted.

5. Close the deflation port (if applicable)
After deflation, check if the deflation port closes automatically:

  • Button-type deflation ports usually reset automatically;
  • Adjustment mechanisms need to be rotated clockwise to the locked position to prevent further air leakage;
  • Gently touch the deflation port with a tissue to confirm that no air is continuously being released.

Precautions:

  • Ensure the surrounding environment is safe before operation, keeping away from fragile items and areas with people activity;
  • High-pressure air may cause frostbite or impact injuries to the skin. Do not touch the deflation port with any part of your body directly.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the operation or if the gas cylinder has issues such as aging or air leakage, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician for handling.
