Car Seat to Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

It is feasible to convert car seats into office chairs, and there have been multiple successful cases. After conversion, they can provide a relatively high level of comfort, but different conversion plans vary in terms of cost, functionality, and price.

I. Buick GL8 Seat Conversion On platforms like Xianyu, there has been a trend of converting Buick GL8 car seats into office chairs. The conversion cost is relatively low. Many netizens spend between 300 and 500 yuan to transform seats originally removed from the car into office chairs that can move smoothly and have a backrest adjustable to a lying position by adding a base and casters. The GL8 seats are designed with a focus on comfort, featuring left and right armrests, being spacious and comfortable, and conforming to ergonomic design principles to provide good support. Some users who have brought them into their offices have found them to be more comfortable than regular ergonomic chairs. The headrest can be adjusted in height and angle, and there is also lumbar and back support along with armrests. After sitting on them, users feel like 'there is someone hugging them from behind.'

There are various conversion plans. The most common one is to replace the middle row with more powerful aviation seats that have multiple functions such as forward and backward movement, rotation, electric massage, ventilation, and heating. A simpler and more cost-effective plan focuses on converting the seats into home computer chairs or office chairs. The operation process usually involves finding a middle-row seat from a GL8, preparing an adapter plate and a swivel chair base with casters, fixing the adapter plate between the seat and the swivel chair base, and connecting the wires properly.

II. Toyota Crown Office Chair Toyota has launched a Crown office chair, which is based on the electric front seats of the Crown model. It retains most of the functional configurations of the original car seats, such as support for electric reclining, height adjustment, seat cushion forward-tilt angle adjustment, and lumbar support. It is also equipped with seat ventilation and heating functions. The most interesting design of this office chair is that the original car's seatbelt buckles have been retained and converted into USB ports for device charging. However, it is priced at 495,000 yen (approximately 21,244 yuan at the current exchange rate) and is limited to only 70 units, making it relatively expensive.
